Senior Editor (Washington, D.C., or Portland, Maine)

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance is a national nonprofit research and advocacy organization working to reverse today’s extreme levels of concentrated corporate power and advance policies to rebuild the economic capacity of local communities. We use in-depth research, reporting, and data analysis to produce influential reports and articles. Our work uncovers the public policy decisions that have fueled concentration and shows how we can change the rules to create an equitable and democratic future. Our analysis is frequently featured in national news media and sought out by policymakers. We work closely with a broad range of allies to move these ideas and policies.

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) is looking for a Senior Editor to join a small team within ILSR focused on checking the power of monopolies, winning changes in federal antitrust policy, and leveling the playing field for local businesses. See https://ilsr.org/independent-business/ for the team’s recent work on Amazon, Walmart, dollar chains, and more. This position reports to the director of this initiative and can be based in Washington, D.C., or Portland, Maine.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Editing and guiding the production of reports, articles, commentary, and other pieces produced by the program’s researchers, in coordination with the director. (35% of time)

  • Researching and writing compelling articles, reports, and other pieces. (35%)

  • Producing a regular newsletter and managing content for a section of ILSR’s website. (15%)

  • Supporting the program’s media and communications strategy, including developing article pitches, engaging with reporters, reaching key audiences, and expanding readership. (15%)

A successful candidate is:

  • An exceptionally good writer with the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and compelling way.

  • Scrupulously attentive to accuracy, detail, and nuance.

  • Skilled at helping researchers and writers produce their best work.

  • A strong analytical thinker who can identify the pivotal questions and gaps in a piece.

  • A skilled manager of time and details, with the ability to manage multiple short- and long-term projects simultaneously.

  • Great interpersonal skills and a genuine enjoyment of collaboration.

  • Passionate about the ILSR’s mission of fighting corporate monopolies and building community power.

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least 4 years of experience in journalism, or writing and editing in a think tank, advocacy, academic, or related role (so long as your writing has been for a general audience).

  • Strong knowledge of public policy processes. Expertise in antitrust or other relevant policy areas is a plus.

  • A bachelor’s degree.

This position is full-time, based in Portland, Maine, or Washington, D.C. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Position includes 100% employer-paid health plan (you pay no premiums); generous vacation, holiday, and parental leave; and a retirement plan with a matching contribution. We are a dynamic and friendly team dedicated to making the world a better place. ILSR takes professional growth seriously.

Applications are welcome from a broad range of applicants. ILSR is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability. ILSR is committed to providing employees with a work environment free of discrimination and harassment. How to Apply:

Please send a cover letter addressed to Stacy Mitchell, résumé, and two writing samples reflecting your original work to hiring@ilsr.org. The cover letter should be no longer than 400 words and the writing samples no longer than 1,000 words each (excerpts of longer pieces are welcome).
