Job Description

The Plant Manager plays an integral role in the organization. They are responsible for safe, quality, on-time productions at or above budgeted margins. They maintain a culture of high performance through effective communication, coordination, pride, the delegation of responsibility, accountability, and discipline. The primary focus of this role is managing a team of around 20 skilled tradesmen and that includes production planning, scheduling, safety documentation, and running day-to-day operations.

Responsibilities

The Plant Manager is continuously aware of all aspects of the jobs in accordance with engineering drawings, expected scheduling, costs, and delivery dates. The Plant Manager assigns and monitors production personnel (material handling, crane operators, burning, fitting, welding, and coating) to ensure safety, optimize productivity, and meet job schedules and estimates. More specific functions include:

● Leadership – Ensure and motivate employees to work together to deliver expected results

● Labor management – Hire, train, direct and collaborate on individual performance that yields expected results

● Plant readiness – Maintain facilities, machinery, and equipment to deliver optimum performance within the boundaries of available capital

● Process synchronization – Coordinate all plant activities and their sequence into smooth production flows with the high machine and labor utilization and minimum waste

● Capital improvement – Identify, analyze, and propose investments that promise fast returns through lower costs and/or productivity gains

● Job tracking – Daily monitoring and monthly reporting actuals vs scheduled costs on all jobs

● Regulatory compliance – Ensure all legal requirements, company safety procedures, and local and state health and safety regulations are met

● Lead and direct the Quality supervisor, engineer, and Purchasing Manager to define the scope of work for fabrication and installation

● Determine resource requirements for production and installation, equipment, tooling, staffing, training, material, and supply acquisition.

● Present look-back week report and look-ahead week projection to the leadership team on the production team’s schedule and any roadblocks.

● Plan and organize production logistics and schedules, establish timelines, manage production schedules, production efficiency, and allocated budgets.

● Oversee inventory control of tools, materials, and supplies, and maintain inventory.

● Oversee shipping and receiving activities, and coordinate with Project Managers to schedule pickups, drop-offs, and shipments. Maintain shipping schedules.

● Plan work for efficient execution with consideration of logistics, order of operations, and integration with concurrent projects in production.

● Identify areas of improvement for increased efficiency, productivity, and resource conservation, and implement solutions

● Knowledge in all aspects of fabrication, shearing, forming, fitting and welding, misc. steel parts and equipment, tanks, plate ducts, structural steel, etc.

Requires

● Degree in manufacturing, industrial management, or business preferred

● 5+ years plant manager, supervisor, or related experience

● 5+ years of fabrication experience, specifically in an AISC-associated industry

● Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal health and safety regulations

● Demonstrated expertise in running heavy machines and fabrication shops

● Solid track record of labor-management and productivity improvement

● Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently.

● Excellent leadership, team building, and management skills

● Excellent conflict resolution and decision-making abilities

● Able to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 30 pounds

● Able to read commercial and architectural drawings

● Ability to shift priorities quickly

● Good listening skills. Ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
