Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Biotransformation Scientist experienced in metabolite identification and the enzymology of drug metabolizing enzymes. The successful candidate will conduct in vitro and ex vivo biotransformation studies, while working collaboratively project teams at various stages in the drug discovery and development continuum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Training, and mentoring colleagues to enhance their skills and knowledge of sample preparation, analytical techniques and biotransformation.
  • Serves as Inotiv representative for In Vitro DMPK studies and serves in a consulting role to provide guidance to clients. Collaborates with both internal/external members of DMPK team.
  • Ensure the appropriate conduct of studies, leads the interpretation of study results, and prepares study reports suitable for internal/external use.
  • Design, conduct and manage the execution of biotransformation studies in support of drug discovery.
  • Utilize LC-MS/MS platforms to identify and structurally characterize metabolites generated from in vitro and/or in vivo studies (multiple species).
  • Ability to interpret mass spectral data to make structural assignments.
  • Independently designs, develops and executes biotransformation research assignments.
  • Hands on work in metabolite identification by LC-MC/MS and determination of pathways of small molecules, peptides, or other novel modalities
  • Perform metabolite profiling exercises across multiple species and in multiple in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo matrices and conditions.
  • Utilize biotransformation techniques (e.g., inhibitors, co-factor fortification) to elucidate the enzymology of drug metabolism systems contributing to the disposition of a drug or drug candidate(s)
  • Contribute to drug discovery and early drug development through the conduct of in vitro and in vivo drug metabolism studies designed to understand biotransformation pathways/routes of elimination of small molecules.
  • Evaluates new technology, analytical techniques, software and workflows.

Skills and Abilities

  • Have a basic understanding of drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics and have experience conducting in vitro ADME assays utilizing LC–MS/MS techniques.
  • Experience, skills, and abilities must include knowledge of enzyme kinetics, routine bioanalytical techniques including wet chemistry separations, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometric analysis, instrument operation, and data processing.
  • Displays versatility and accuracy performing laboratory operations, some of which may be difficult and/or non-routine.
  • Ability to use a computer to compile and maintain databases for records and inventory, utilizing the appropriate software.
  • An attitude for quality, an eye for detail, the ability to follow written instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
  • A working knowledge and awareness of general laboratory procedures.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to all safety regulations and procedures.

Education and Experience

  • BS or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field, and greater than 5 years qualified experience in vitro/in vivo Drug Metabolism studies, or
  • MS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field, and at least 3 years qualified experience with in vitro/in vivo Drug Metabolism studies, or
  • PhD in a Pharmaceutical-related science with full knowledge and post-doctoral experience with in vitro/in vivo Drug Metabolism studies

Physical Activity and Working Conditions

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior office work or laboratory environment
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include use of protective equipment
  • The noise level is usually moderate
  • This position will frequently be involved with radiant/electrical energy, solvents, grease, oil, irritants, acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals, electro-mechanical hazards, flammable materials and bio-hazards. Due to exposure to hazardous biological material (which may include HIV positive specimens), immunization to Hepatitis B and/or other diseases may be a requirement.
