Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Engineering Manager – Programming position manages the software programming process for industrial robot automation projects. This position is responsible for managing the Programming (PR) department, while organizing highly complex activities for the architecture, development, implementation, and maintenance of software engineering projects across a variety of hardware platforms.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Leads and manages the Programming (PR) department of a growing industrial automation company.

· Establishes, manages, and maintains comprehensive Software programming standards/processes for a variety of platforms (HMI/GUI/PLC/.net/Robot).

· Architects and leads highly complex software projects for industrial automation systems.

· Manages direct reports with a variety of programming backgrounds and skill sets (EE/CS/Automation Technician).

· Manages the scope of work for software programming on customized projects, including planning, supervising project work, and verifying designs to ensure effective performance of the work.

· Interprets client requirements for GUI/communication interface, networking, and functional requirements, and creates specifications based on these requirements.

· Ensures project requirements are fulfilled including cost, schedule, function, performance, serviceability, and appearance.

· Allocates team resources based on project requirements passed down from Project Manager.

· Monitors PR team resource allocation and provides weekly task progress reports to Project Manager as it pertains to project deadlines and task completion.

· Provides Project Manager with accurate and timely resource allocation to ensure timeline estimations for budgeting project hours.

· Performs programming duties as required to supplement the Engineering staff.

· Creates flow charts, manuals, and documentation as required used to distribute information and communicate functionality of company developed programs.

· Directs and assists in developing programming standards including interfacing with existing IAS automation tools in both industrial programming and .net framework environments.

· Provides guidance and direction in technical risk evaluation, failure analysis, and functional analysis, as part of the design team.

· Provides leadership and mentors the PR Engineering staff and associated personnel.

· Develops and maintains positive customer relations, including direct interaction with customers as required.

· Knows and adheres to all safety rules, such as safe work practices and standard operating procedures.

· Other job duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Controls Engineer I, Controls Engineer II, Software Engineer I, Software Engineer II, Automation Programming Technician, and Controls/Software Engineering Intern positions, will report to the Engineering Manager – Programming.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

· Bachelor’s Degree in computer science (BCompSc), electrical engineering (BSEE) or similar degree from an accredited college or university.

· Strong IT skillset as relates to industrial programming.

· Five (5) years of automation programming experience.

· Five (5) years of programming in the .net (C/C++/C#) environment.

· Eight (8) year of general software programming experience.

· Experience and skill in troubleshooting automation software system issues.

· High level of proficiency in MS Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Three (3) years of engineering management experience.

· Five (5) years of SQL database programming experience.

· Experience in the AB Studio 5000 programming environment.

· Experience programming in robot specific programming packages

· Experience with industrial communications including OPC servers.

· Familiarity with industrial Vision Systems.

· Experience with project management methods, practices and tools including scoping, facilitations, delegation, and risk management best practices.

· Substantial knowledge of software auditing and management practices.

GENERAL SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

· Excellent written and oral communication skills.

· Demonstrated experience ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

· Experience working within cross-functional teams to handle multiple priorities and meet scheduled milestones.

· Experience coaching and mentoring interns and other engineering partners.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

· Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50lbs.

· Able to use close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color determination, and adjustment of focus.

· Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear.

· Occasionally required to bend, twist, climb, kneel and balance.

· Occasionally required to use hands to grasp, reach and operate objects, tools or controls.

· Occasional exposure to a production environment.

· Must comply with any safety or PPE requirements.

Travel is required approximately 10 % of the job.

Travel is anticipated for this position, typically within a 400-mile radius of the metropolitan Milwaukee area, but this can vary depending on the project, and could include international travel. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary. Some local day travel may also be necessary.
