JOB DESCRIPTION: Behavior Intervention Specialist / Transportation Aide

POSITION: Behavior Intervention Specialist

REPORTS TO: Director

COMPENSATION: $16.50/hour from 6am to 2:30 pm. (Remaining 2019-2020 school days; 8 hours/day plus transportation)

DESCRIPTION: Highly qualified Behavior Intervention Specialist with knowledge and skills necessary to assist individuals, groups and systems through the application of positive behavior supports. The Behavior Specialist helps coordinate Functional Assessments of Behavior and Behavior Intervention Plan that address students’ inappropriate behaviors and provide a means to help the students become more academically successful. Behavior Intervention Specialist also provides classroom and school-wide behavior management strategies.  Additional duties include aiding on the van to transport students to school in the mornings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· AZ Fingerprint Clearance Card

· Minimum of 2 years working with at risk” and/or “behaviorally challenged” students.

· Experience with function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies that focus on reducing problem behavior and increasing more appropriate behavior.

 · Hold or be able to obtain certification in Crisis Management and De-escalation techniques.

· Exceptional skills in collecting behavior data to inform instruction and prescribe work plans for individual students.

 · Ability to follow academic and behavior plans and implement them effectively

· Exceptional knowledge in the use of technology to support instruction

· Demonstrate ability to work as a member of a team

· Ascribes to the philosophy to empower students and peers to be their best

· Demonstrates exceptional skill in the roles of a behavioral interventionist, teaching assistant, and transportation assistant.

 

SCOPE OF POSITION: The Behavior Intervention Specialist provides support and assistance to staff and students in the school.  In addition, the Behavior Specialist works directly with the teacher and identified students to adopt behaviors that substantially increase their academic performance. These students are the lowest achieving students who have been identified in Child Study as requiring substantial supplemental behavior intervention and support. Under the supervision of the classroom teacher, the Behavior Intervention Specialist will provide diversified strategies and activities specifically designed for targeted students.

Professional Responsibilities: The Behavior Intervention Specialist will:

· Effectively support student acquisition of core curriculum and positive behavior management techniques as identified by the classroom teacher and district policies.

· Assist staff in: defining and measuring behavior; understanding principles of reinforcement; teaching new behavior; implementing strategies for weakening behavior; and identifying antecedents.

· Participate as requested in team meetings with the identified student’s teachers for the purpose of completing a Functional Behavioral Analysis and Functional Behavior Plan and Programming.

· Facilitate team meetings that: design Behavior Interventions Plans; address classroom organization, effective instruction, social skills instruction, and ethical issues; School-wide Positive Behavioral Support; and factors that affect effectiveness including social validity and treatment integrity.

· Work with individual teachers, groups of teachers and/or the entire staff on issues such as: crisis intervention, learning and collaboration issues, and factors that can affect development and implementation of interventions.

· Promote highly specialized positive behavior interventions in which “at risk” students thrive: behavior instruction that is explicit, intensive, accelerated and provides ample practice.

· Engage in ongoing documentation that includes specific and detailed Antecedent to behavior, Behavior and Consequences (ABC) to maintain a valid and reliable record of student behavioral progress.  All data must be approved by supervising teacher.

· Treat all students and staff with dignity and respect

· Model positive behavior processes that assist students in assessing and managing their own work and behavior.

· Provide recognition of a variety of student accomplishments and positive behaviors.

· Work cooperatively with NOVA staff to promote positive student behavior by providing support to teachers in their implementation of positive behavior supports in their classrooms.

· Continually supervise students to ensure a safe, non-threatening, nurturing environment where students can thrive.  This requires eyes on students at all times.  Side conversations, phone usage, breaks, etc., must be approved by supervising teacher.

 · Engage in on-going professional development to increase knowledge and skills of positive student behavior support for all students, targeted students and students who represent sub-group populations. · Conduct conflict resolution and peer mediation sessions

· Participate in building level team meetings and/or grade level meetings, as appropriate

· Attend professional development opportunities to maintain high level of skill and knowledge of current research and practices

· Organize and schedule time commitments to meet demands of the job

· Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures; report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.

· Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve District, building, departmental and/or grade level goals

· Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill
