Paralegal Assistant Department of Health and Human Services Washington, DC

  • Requires HHS Clearance includes criminal background check and credit check
  • Full-time/Permanent position paid hourly. Pay: $26.47/hour & an additional $4.22/hour H&W to put towards benefits premiums; if not used for benefits the $4.22 is automatically put into a 401k account on candidates behalf. Benefits - Health, Dental, Vision, 401k, PTO, Sick Leave


  1. Assists lawyers by preparing legal papers and correspondence of a legal nature, such as summonses, complaints, motions and subpoenas using typewriter, computer/word processor.
  2. Review cases and supporting documents for completeness of information, proper execution, certification, technical details or other requirements.
  3. Review and respond to subpoenas, including gathering documents and preparing authentication when needed.
  4. Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, beneficiaries, claimants and others.
  5. Provide on-going assistance to assigned attorney by drafting and mailing letters, communicating with the client, opposing counsel, administrative judges, U.S. Attorney's office and others.
  6. Coordinates necessary arrangements for travel, arranges schedules of visits, makes reservations, and prepares travel vouchers using automated systems; keep attorney(s) and supervisor(s) informed of important matters while in travel status based on knowledge of program activities and current priorities.
  7. Arrange meetings which often include participants outside of organization.
  8. Assist attorneys with electronic filing obligations and the organization and management of electronic documents and data.
  9. Track cases using a data management program; prepare reports and analyses of case load data, and respond to inquiries regarding case assignments and case status.
  10. Inputs attorneys' time into automated system.
  11. May review law journals and other legal publications to identify court decisions pertinent to pending cases and may present articles to attorneys.
  12. Experienced in legal office administration and developing graphic/artistic presentations for publications and documents.
  13. Supports program/project management by maintaining personnel and other files, prepares reports, resumes and other legal documentation.
  14. Assists in graphics preparation and presentations. This person shall answer telephones, schedule meetings, make travel arrangements for senior staff, complete required reports and assemble legal information for briefings.
  15. Experienced in using automated word processing, graphics systems and spreadsheet applications.


  • Minimum two years' experience.
  • High school graduate, minimum. Bachelor's preferred.
  • Candidate should have excellent secretarial skills coupled with basic knowledge of law and legal procedures.
  • He/she must be computer literate and have a strong understanding of the English language.
