Reports to: Vice President of Preconstruction Services
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for the successful production of engineering and shop drawing deliverables (2D and 3D as required) through the effective supervision of Architectural Woodwork Engineers, Process Manager, QC Technicians and Outsource Drafting Providers. This person will have a passion for and know how to leverage technology to drive a Delivery Strategy that produces high-quality deliverables (efficient fabrication and installation) with a strong focus on improving the design phase and project outcomes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee resource assignment (internal staff and external partners) and schedule plan for requested Engineering Services
  • Consider all aspects of operations, purchasing, outsourcing partners and product specifications based on multiple constraints and individual project objectives to include budget, timeliness, complexity, and quality when assigning Engineering Service requests to the proper resource
  • Establish tools for tracking and reporting Engineering Service status, schedule/budget KPIs, and managing issues on a periodic and consistent basis to provide Operations visibility and manage expectations
  • Drive communication, prioritization, and creative strategizing required to keep Engineering Service delivery on track and our internal/external customers satisfied and informed
  • Work across organizational boundaries to collect, manage, and disseminate key metrics to provide Engineering Service performance reporting across the portfolio of projects, resources, and deliverables to individual outsource partners, corporate/regional teams, and leadership stakeholders
  • Develop and implement appropriate QA/QC processes to ensure Engineering Services meet design intent that can be effectively fabricated and installed
  • Work with leadership and colleagues to create/enhance new/existing Engineering Services that help improve project performance and quality
  • Work with leadership to manage the engineering operational budget (overhead and billable utilization) and report on key budget performance indicators
  • Develop engineering training programs for project teams and outsource partners in proper use of tools and processes that help drive quality and standardized results; work with the training department to organize and conduct this training
  • Engage sales and estimating teams to help forecast future demand, scope and timing required for Engineering Services
  • Partner with product experts and operations teams to properly apply product knowledge, specifically constructability (i.e., best way to manufacture) and install ability (i.e., best way to build in the field), to define and optimize a Delivery Strategy for the requested Engineering Services
  • Oversee the collaborate with manufacturing partners to help ensure the amount of “re-engineering” is minimized to positively impact project outcomes
  • Establish and maintain outsource engineering partner relationships and capacity to help internal engineering professionals fulfill the demand for Engineering Services across all regions and projects
  • Available for weekend and early morning or night work in support of project schedules and/or issue escalation, especially as it pertains to our global outsource engineer partners

Preferred Qualifications (in additional to Minimum Qualifications)


  • Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Construction Management, Building Science, Engineering, Architecture, or Management related field
  • 10+ years’ leadership and/or top contributor experience in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) field
  • Understands project workflows from design, estimation, construction administration, and fabrication
  • Understands Design-Bid-Build, Design/Build, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and other modern contractual delivery methods


  • Familiar with markup and annotation tools (e.g., Bluebeam, PlanGrid, etc.)
  • Familiar with woodwork industry quality standards and certification programs, specifically Architectural Woodwork Institute’s (AWI) Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS) and Quality Certification Program (QCP)

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree (BS)
  • 5+ years of construction, engineering, or millwork fabrication experience


  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills; must be able to work with technical and businesspeople across the organization.
  • Ability to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal through collaborating across roles and diverse groups.
  • Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management skills.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Able to read and understand contract documents, drawings, and specifications
  • Demonstrated financial analysis skills for managing budget and preparing business case justification (e.g., ROI, payback) used to identify and prioritize investments in Engineering Services
  • Strong understanding of various drawing and/or modeling software platforms: AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Sketchup, etc.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn and grow; maintain/advance expertise, including industry trends, strategies, and products
  • Ability to manage project timelines and outcomes for projects with considerable implementation risk; ability to prioritize activities against business and project (scope vs. schedule vs. resource) constraints
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal skills and a team player; must be able to establish credibility as a trusted advisor and drive/manage change with peers and across functional teams
