Currently, HGL has a position open for a Scientist 2 in the Philadelphia, PAand Reston, VA areas.


The successful candidate will be responsible for leading various field assignments including drilling oversight, environmental investigations, and remediation oversight. Assigned tasks may include collecting environmental samples of various media including soil, groundwater, surface water and sediment; data management support; developing data tables, figures, and reports; developing and interpreting environmental data.

In addition, the candidate will be responsible for a broad range of office work including report writing, work plan development, data analysis, and data interpretation. Must be a team-oriented person willing to conduct a variety of field and office assignments. It is anticipated that field assignments may require 50% or greater travel requirements during peak field season.

Required Skills

Required skills include knowledge of environmental investigations and remediation projects regulated by CERCLA; must be able to execute multiple tasks concurrently as field team leader; excellent communication and organizational skills; experience working under detailed quality assurance/quality control programs.

Must be proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and other MS Office applications.

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to analyze and interpret environmental and/or hydrogeologic data
  • GIS and/or database management

Required Experience

  • Must have a minimum of 4 years of environmental field investigation experience.
  • Preparation of work plans and project deliverables.
  • Field subcontractor oversight inclusive of soil borings and well installations utilizing various drilling methods.
  • Collection of water, soil, and soil vapor samples utilizing various sampling techniques.

Preferred Experience

Experience with the following is highly desirable:

  • PFAS sampling and remediation
  • Knowledge of and experience with RCRA, CERCLA, DoD, DOE, or USEPA projects.
  • Environmental remediation experience is a plus.

Required Education

The Scientist 2 position requires a minimum of a BS or BA degree in a field related to Environmental Science, Geology, Hydrogeology, or Chemistry.

Preferred Education

A MS degree is a plus.

Required Qualifications

To perform the duties of this position a person will need to be in good physical health and be able to lift up to 30 pounds in order to perform field tasks. Field tasks may take place in environments which include rugged terrain and weather extremes. The successful candidate will be required to possess or obtain OSHA HAZWOPER certification upon employment and be able to work in various levels of PPE including a respirator, if required.

Travel, overtime, and moderate physical work will routinely be required. While travel requirements are project-specific and will vary, applicant should have the ability to travel approximately 50% or greater.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional registration in Geology is preferred. A PG license obtained through the ASBOG examination is a plus, but not required.


A pre-hire drug test and physical is required. Some positions may require US Citizenship.
