Position Overview

A newly created position at Hubbell Incorporated that will be responsible for creating, integrating, and managing Hubbell's various government relations initiatives, partnerships and strategies. This position works with internal and external stakeholders to ensure federal and state legislative opportunities are optimized for Hubbell's businesses and products. This position will help create and drive Hubbell's government relations agenda and priorities while also providing advice and counsel on legislative processes and executing on various deliverables, including grant writing and lobbying activities. This position reports directly to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel but will collaborate with and coordinate across the businesses and functions of Hubbell. Candidates must have a strong understanding of federal legislative processes and advocacy work, be a self-starter who can bring business leaders and cross-functional teams together for specific projects and also have the ability to write and speak persuasively and with expertise on the company's behalf.

Duties and Responsibilities

As Director, Government Relations the candidate will bring best-in-class thinking to Hubbell regarding strategy, development of the function, and partnership with Hubbell's key stakeholders, and will be expected to:
  • Serve as Hubbell's in-house subject matter expert on all things Government Relations;
  • Lead and coordinate across businesses and functions Hubbell's government relations strategy and related grant submission processes;
  • Manage enterprise and segment focused lobbying and government relations efforts, including ensuring message alignment and prioritization of projects;
  • Partner with internal business unit and functional leaders on opportunities for Hubbell;
  • Have an understanding and ability to advise on various federal infrastructure programs and domestic procurement programs applicable to Hubbell;
  • Have a deep understanding of government advocacy processes, including, without limitation, lobbying, grant writing, federal and state legislation applicable to the electrical manufacturing and utility industries (including IIJA, IRA and BAA) and monitor any changes and/or opportunities in federal/state programs;
  • Navigate competing priorities to implement enterprise strategy on government relations;
  • Monitor regulatory changes and opportunities at the federal and state level;
  • Work cross-functionally with stakeholders from Sales, Strategy, IR, Legal and the business units to communicate, plan for and respond to government relations projects, training, and required disclosures and submissions;
  • Assist in the development of enterprise processes and policies;
  • Oversee and manage any internal and external spend related to government relations;
  • Partner with and manage outside consultants and advisors;
  • Represent Hubbell before trade associations, government agencies and customers; and
  • Research, counsel and coordinate public grants, subsidies, and papers; lead the development and writing of such submissions in coordination with applicable members of the Legal, Sales, Strategy and Business Unit teams.

Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will have the following experience:
  • Exhibit the highest ethical standards and a compliance-oriented mindset;
  • Bachelor's degree; an advanced degree (law, public policy, MBA or related field) a plus;
  • 10 years of government relations experience; preferably both on Capitol Hill and for a private or public company;
  • Experience in the manufacturing, energy, electrical manufacturing, utility industries;
  • Experience lobbying with a public corporation, trade association or outside policy consulting organization;
  • Strong understanding of government relations communication and reputation management;
  • Excellent writing, communication, analytical and facilitation skills that drive action among internal and external stakeholders relating to government relations;
  • Ability to think strategically while developing both short and long term enterprise and segment focused strategies;
  • Demonstrated project-team coordination;
  • Ability to work cross-functionally in an organization and partner with outside groups such as trade associations and industry stakeholders;
  • Motivated individual who can work well independently while also bringing together people and focusing on key issues for the company;
  • Solutions focused individual, willing to understand and continue to learn about Hubbell's businesses and products and advocate for same; strong business acumen and curiosity;
  • Proven ability to implement a comprehensive government affairs strategies including federal / state lobbying, trade associations, and partnerships with industry peers, customers and third-party stakeholders.
