The Full Time shifts for this position is 5:00AM to 1:30 pm Monday thru Friday (40 hours per week) with every other weekend required. Evenings are as needed Reference Lab Technician : Provides daily coordination for the reference laboratory area of Central Processing in the Department of Pathology. Assures patient orders, specimens and results for reference lab testing are appropriately handled for effective patient care.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: Serves as customer service contact for the reference laboratory area of the laboratory. Interacts with internal/external customers including a wide variety of physician customers regarding laboratory testing sent out to reference laboratories. Provides accurate information regarding specimen requirements for test procedures and availability of services. Provides information regarding status of specimens and confirmed rest results. Resolves order, specimen and report problems with representatives of reference laboratories. Request test into laboratory information system as needed. Identifies, labels, aliquots, processes, packages and sends out specimens to defined reference labs. Follows special specimen handling requirements of the reference laboratory. Implements infectious specimen transportation requirements as defined by applicable regulations. Receives final reports from reference laboratories and inputs results as needed into laboratory information system. Assures final reports are received for all tests sent out to reference laboratories. Receives all critical laboratory reports on reference laboratory testing and processes according to standard procedures.

Assists physicians, pathologist and laboratory management in establishing send-out procedures for highly specialized testing, which requires reference lab testing. Assists pathologist with prospective review process for reference lab testing.

Follows LIS change request process on all new reference laboratory tests ordered to ensure accurate billing. Updates the laboratory system with all database changes required and test code changes from the Reference Laboratory. Monitors reference laboratory interface and alerts appropriate management staff of any downtime. Assists the LIS manager in the implementation and testing of new reference laboratory interfaces. Documents quality assurance problems, customer complaints and reference lab information accurately and completely. Provides data on quality indicators to management as required. Keeps work area in a clean and organized manner at all times. Decontaminates counter surfaces, instruments and general work area according to laboratory protocol. Performs Central Processing duties as assigned. Ascertains the appropriateness of barcode labeling on specimens received from the units; corrects problems with barcode labeling; log in and place specimens in appropriate location for manual and automated processing by the laboratory sections. Prioritizes the processing of specimens according to laboratory policy (i.e. all STAT ECA specimens receive highest priority) Generates required copies of all clinical laboratory results on request6 including computer faxing and manual fixing of results.

Assistants the technical staff in the clarification and/or resolution of problem specimens or specimen processing concerns.

Aliquots, centrifuges, pours off and labels specimens for the purpose of separation, properly stores specimens that are not analyzed immediately. Ensures that all laboratory processing documents are properly filed and boxed with proper labeling.

Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff. CORE COMPETENCIES: Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Basic knowledge of laboratory operations and types of testing processes. Knowledge of Laboratory Information System (LIS) processes and procedures and basic computer literacy. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to perform duties in a professional and efficient manner. Ability to maintain patients' confidentiality and display respect for privacy. Excellent customer service skills. Competence in both oral and written English. Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, physicians, students, patients and their families, healthcare providers, Hospital and University officials and the general public. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Associate's degree in medical laboratory technology. In lieu of degree, will accept five (5) or more years of experience in reference laboratory specimens processing. One to three years of clinical laboratory accessing experience including processing of reference laboratory testing. Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) certification is preferred.
