Director of Nursing

JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Nursing is responsible for ensuring the provision of quality nursing care services to youth in residential, group home and educational settings within The Hope Institute.   Administrative responsibilities will include supervision of all nursing personnel; ensuring compliance with local and national health care standards as well as with all applicable state and federal regulations; and participating in health care planning for agency-wide goals.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:               

  1. Personal Outcomes for Youth
    1. Responsible for coordination of Health Services to ensure that youth at The Hope School will have the best possible health including:
      1. Supporting youth and their families in the acquisition of health care knowledge and decision-making.
      2. Supporting youth to access all recommended health care services.
  2. Management of Personnel
    1. Responsible for overseeing nursing personnel and maintaining appropriate nursing staff coverage.
    2. Responsible for development and maintenance of nursing personnel schedules.
    3. Responsible for review and completion of time and attendance system information.
    4. Responsible for evaluation of performance of nursing personnel
    5. Responsible for the development of nursing personnel skills and employee performance through the development of educational offering, goal setting and disciplinary action as needed.
    6. Responsible for the development and provision of orientation for new nursing personnel.
    7. Responsible for the development and provision of health-related orientation and educational offerings for non-nursing personnel.
  3. Oversight of Nursing Operations
    1. Responsible for the development and ongoing review of nursing policies and procedures ensuring these reflect state-of-the art, best practices.
    2. Responsible for ensuring planning and scheduling for Health Services clinics including:
      1. Medical Clinic
      2. Dental Clinic
      3. Eye Clinic
      4. Laboratory Clinic
      5. Neurology Clinic
      6. Vision Screening Clinic

      1. Responsible to ensure compliance of nursing for completion and safety of nursing interventions.
      2. Ensures effective and timely response by nursing to all emergency situations including but not limited to injuries and seizures. Validates appropriate completion of all needed documentation.
      3. Responsible for development and implementation of quality improvement activities for the nursing department. 
      4. Participates in on call coverage by RN staff for telephone triage of emergent health care concerns of youth and management of staff call ins, which may include working shift if necessary.
      5. Oversees and makes recommendations concerning the nursing department budget ensuring appropriate expenditures within the allotted resources. In addition, ensures compliance with procedures associated with overtime, on-call, equipment and supply requests. 

Responsible for the development and implementation of agency-wide Infection Control Committee

 

  1. Coordinates Health Care Services
    1. Works to coordinate health care services with outside providers including:
      1. Medical Director
      2. Dentist
      3. Geneticist
      4. Ophthalmologist
      5. Pharmacy
      6. Laboratory Services
      7. Neurologist
      8. Public Health
      9. Others as needed
    2. Maintain essential contacts with others in the health care community to act as resources for information as needed.
    3. Responsible for maintaining good working relationships with other members of the Hope School Team for coordination of services that includes a health care component.
  2. Communication
    1. Responsible for maintaining regular reports in person and in writing to document nursing department issues, concerns, goals and activities.
    2. Responsible for ensuring written reports are completed as required to The Public Health Department DCFS, DHS, and all other outside agencies as required.
    3. Responsible for ensuring written reports are completed as required by Risk Management (Follow up reports and Rounds Reports) and other entities as required.
  3. Clinical Competency

Will maintain clinical competencies with nursing as they apply to the youth of The Hope School.

 

 

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assumes responsibility as a mandated reporter concerning incidents of purported abuse/neglect of students as outlined in the agency's policies and procedures.

  3. All other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:    

Work is performed primarily in an indoor office or classroom environment, free from extreme weather conditions. Work may include a moderate amount of noise (business office with computers, phone and printers). Work may require working flexible hours if trainings are required outside of normal business hours.

 

 

TRAINING, ACADEMIC AND EXPERIENTIAL REQURIEMENTS:

  1. Registered Nurse, licensed in the State of Illinois
  2. 3 years of demonstrated managerial experience 
  3. 5 years of strong clinical experience as an RN 
  4. Excellent organizational skills
  5. Excellent human relations skills
  6. Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies 
  7. Computer skills including word processing and spread sheet development
  8. Successful background clearance, physical and drug/alcohol screening
  9. Valid Illinois driver's license and qualify as a DCFS licensed driver

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing or above
  2. Experience with health care needs of children with developmental disabilities
  3. Experience working in a residential facility
