Job Description

Hogan & Associates Construction has an immediate opening for a TRADE ESTIMATOR. A Trade Estimator works under the direction of the Estimating Manager to estimate the final cost of work for various construction trades for specific projects. A Trade Estimator is responsible for accuracy of estimates and bids, and maintains a high level of professionalism from the department while meeting deadlines in a timely manner. A Trade Estimator considers and protects company profit throughout the process. A Trade Estimator may support multiple lead estimators and generally works on multiple projects at a time.


Qualifications, Experience, Training:

  • More than 5 years experience (10+ years preferred) as a cost estimator for a commercial contractor
  • Knowledge of construction means and methods, production rates, and materials for specific trades:
    • Structural & site concrete, structural and architectural steel, misc. carpentry, doors (required)
    • Earthwork, utilities, sitework (strongly preferred)
    • Other trades (preferred)
  • Knowledge of and relationships with key material vendors strongly preferred
  • Substantial industry knowledge and aware of current market conditions and trends required
  • Construction field experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management or related field preferred

  • Proficient in PlanSwift, Bid2Win, Tecla, Smartbid, Microsoft Office, BlueBeam
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, REVIT, Sage/Timberline estimating, Trimble Business Center
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and coordinate with other team members
  • Maintain a strict high-level of confidentiality regarding financial specifics of projects


Duties, Responsibilities & Expectations:

Cost Estimating & Bidding

  • Know and track unit costs of construction means and methods, and materials for specific trades
  • Perform detailed quantity take-off and pricing for multiple specific trades as needed and in a timely manner and prior to established deadlines
  • Review estimates and pricing with lead estimators and project managers as requested
  • Review the related specifications to assure the estimate or bid complies with requirements
  • Review and understand specifications for special requirements - allowances, special materials, single-source materials, special warranties, required qualifications or specific contractors, insurance requirements, prevailing wages, source limitations (Buy America, etc)
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as assigned


Design Review & Constructability Analysis

  • Offer improvements for clarity of intent, cost savings, better value, ease of construction, material availability, reduced operation and maintenance cost, etc, for assigned trades
  • Review related specifications to offer improvements (single source items, prequalified bidders, discontinued items, etc)
  • Submit these reviews to lead estimator


Business Development & Marketing

  • Participate in and support interviews for potential projects when assigned
  • Support lead estimator to develop portions of conceptual cost models for proposals and potential projects based on historical costs
  • Maintain client and architect relationships by answering cost-related questions and providing cost trend feedback


Subcontractor Bidding

  • Participate in solicitation of subcontractors and developing bidder interest when requested
    • Makes phone calls and sends personal emails to invite potential bidders to bid
  • Analyze subcontractor and supplier bids to determine inclusions, exclusions, assumptions, ability to perform as needed
    • Ask questions of bidders to clarify scope & pricing (phone call, text message, email)



  • Assist the Project Manager in job costing the project as needed
  • Answer questions from project team about the estimate or bid



  • Work with other estimators as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed
  • This is a salary position and the expectation is for a normal week to consist of 9-10 hours per day with additional hours as needed to perform these duties and responsibilities.
