Job Description

Hindman Auctions, one of the nation's leading fine art auction houses, is looking to add a full-time Jewelry Specialist (Graduate Gemologist) in our Chicago office. In this role, the Specialist will grow Hindman's business in the Fine Jewelry and Timepieces department by building long-term client relationships with private collectors, institutions and industry contracts, and acting as an expert on the jewelry and timepiece market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all gemology work associated with the evaluation of property for auction including gem identification, carat weight calculation, grading, cataloging consigned property, researching authenticity, provenance and reviewing client inquiries to determine sale potential
  • Research and catalogue property for auction with the goal of assigning auction estimates, also valuing property for IRS (estate tax, gift tax, donation, etc.) and insurance appraisals
  • Work with other Specialists to promote the auction by helping clients at auction previews, speaking to clients about the property, developing, tracking and communicating client interest and executing bids at auction
  • Act as a point of contact for client inquiries regarding appraisal services, consignments and auctions
  • Proactively develop new opportunities to grow and maintain the volume of transactions with top dealers, institutions and private collectors
  • Travel to regional offices to support Business Development efforts, and to evaluate and consign property for upcoming sales
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop strategies to reach new potential consignors and ensure seamless client service

Successful Candidate will possess:

  • Graduate Gemologist degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the Jewelry Industry; experience with diamonds, colored stones, signed jewelry
  • 3-5 years of appraisal experience
  • Direct hands-on experience with current market pricing of gemstones
  • Auction house experience strongly desired
  • Working knowledge of contemporary, antique and vintage jewelry a plus
  • Strong sense of professionalism; excellent communication and client service skills
  • Proven ability to initiate new business, self-motivate and work independently
  • Ability to travel at times
