Job Description

Position Summary:

You, the Fitness Specialist, are responsible for developing and implementing all health and fitness related activities for the Independent Living residents of Hebrew SeniorLife - Simon C. Fireman Community in Randolph, Massachusetts. This is a part time, 24 hour, position that works directly with residents in group exercise classes and one-on-one sessions to support their fitness goals, with a focus on building strength and fall prevention and providing health education and support.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct supervised exercise sessions as well as create and implement individual exercise programs for residents
  • Design, develop and teach group exercise classes
  • Conduct fitness consultations, physical performance evaluations (i.e. 1-Repetition Maximum testing and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB)), as well as resting and exercise heart rates and blood pressures to determine appropriate fitness program for residents
  • Record and tabulate participant and programmatic data
  • Operate within an annual health and fitness budget
  • Ensure that fitness facility areas and equipment are orderly, well-maintained, and follow protocols for disinfecting and cleaning equipment
  • Assist in the organization of educational activities and fitness events
  • Remain informed regarding relevant up-to-date research (HSL & other) and trends within the fitness industry
  • Function as part of the resident services team – providing supports to residents to help them function independently.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology or related field
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a senior exercise setting
  • Extensive knowledge of exercise equipment and safety practices
  • Must care deeply about supporting and assisting seniors in maintaining healthy, happy, and fulfilling lifestyles
  • Knowledge of aging and disability issues
  • Current CPR certification
  • Must be able to recognize exercise contraindications and refer to appropriate health professional
  • Must be able to recognize fatigue, injury and physiological stress and respond appropriately
  • Exceptional customer service, teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate flexibility, adjusting behavior, style or schedule as circumstances change
  • Computer proficiency, i.e. ability to use MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel

Preferred Qualification

  • ACSM Fitness certification

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift, push and pull 50 pounds and have the ability to assist seniors on/off exercise equipment
  • Must be able to stand during scheduled work times
