SUMMARY

A Production Supervisor is responsible for a department section or shift of production within the Astec manufacturing facility focusing on the safety and productivity of all employees assigned. A successful Production Supervisor also is accountable for planning, executing, and achieving production/maintenance schedule deadlines; accomplishing quality and efficiency objectives; and leading efforts related to hiring, documentation, and performance management.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but not limited to )
Manage and plan people and resources applying in an efficient and effective manner to meet production/maintenance schedule requirements while achieving safety and quality standards
Prepare and monitor production floor for daily production/maintenance adjusting for unscheduled demand as necessary
Facilitate and maintain effective communication between management and operators by sharing day to day safety focus and production/maintenance targets
Assign mentor to new employees, support training efforts, and coach all employees
Investigate, inspect, perform root cause analysis, report, and close all incidents/issues/problems and communicate to immediate supervisor, as necessary. (Including but not limited to: spills, accidents, quality and Total Quality Management (TQM) book completion, as well as employee performance management)
Participate and support all LEAN and continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting and implementing cost-saving ideas
Review production/maintenance set-ups for accuracy and quality requirements, as necessary
Assist/Lead trouble shooting of machines, dies, jigs, positioners, & fixtures
Responsible for providing technical expertise as needed for daily management, change over and/or line setup efficiency, and support the team to achieve operational success
Monitor time and attendance to ensure compliance with Astec procedures
Support and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, the Astec Handbook, Quality and Environmental standards, and all other Astec policies and procedures

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY
Oversee six (6) to forty (40) operators. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems in compliance with any applicable employment law guidelines and upon consultation with the Vice President of Engineering and/or the Director of Human Resources if necessary.


INTERNAL CONTROLS AUTHORITY
The Production Supervisor I or II is responsible for certain internal control responsibilities. These internal control responsibilities will be verbally communicated to the Production Supervisor I or II and periodic feedback will be provided as it relates to performance of internal control responsibilities.

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIRED



Experience/Knowledge
Three (3) years’ experience as a supervisor or operator in a heavy manufacturing industry, millwright, or demonstrated abilities through on-the-job training or education

Minimum one (1) year of experience in Microsoft Excel and lean continuous improvement
Ability to read and interpret a tape measure, engineering drawings, and bills of material (BOM’s)

Continue to grow in lean knowledge and use the tools to identify and assist with continuous improvement
Experience in assisting and developing multi-skilled people
Experience in leading small group activities to drive improvement ideas
Understanding of production costs to include waste, downtime, scrap and re-work


Education
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Exercise considerable initiative/judgment in work methods and in interpreting and delegating work requirements/goals
Excellent verbal and written communication, organization, and problem solving skills working efficiently and accurately to keep up with production requirements
Ability to lead by example, gain respect from team and communicate with clarity whilst demonstrating excellence in approach to work and people activities
Capacity to learn quickly, parts machined are unique to manufactured equipment and change orders are frequent
Flexible and adaptable in coping with pressures, deadlines, and rapidly changing situations
Understanding of customer deliverables and the impact of failure/cost of poor quality


OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Eighteen (18) years of age or older
Pre-employment drug screen, physical and background check
May be required to provide basic hand tools to perform duties
Dependability
Willingness to train on first shift if required
Willingness to work any shift when needed
Flexibility to work additional hours when required
Willingness to drive and work at either Chattanooga location when required
Occasional travel
Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
Ability to provide transportation to and from either Chattanooga location when required
Ability to drive between plant locations and other local destinations when required
Required to carry $100,000/$300,000 liability insurance coverage on any personal vehicle used for company
business. Mileage reimbursed through expense reports submitted to the Company's accounting department.

Levels of the Production Supervisor Position

Levels will be determined based on education, experience and equivalents.



Production Supervisor I
First line supervisor of a production labor workforce. Under management guidance, schedules work, assists with employee selection, reviews employee performance, administers work rules and recommends compensation. Must have beginning to intermediate experience in the following: Microsoft Excel, productivity, lean continuous improvement initiatives, and quality management to apply to department. Recommends equipment upgrades, staffing adjustments, process modifications and may recommend product or service modifications.



Production Supervisor II
First line supervisor of a semi-skilled or skilled production labor workforce. The job typically requires specialized training in supervision and a minimum of six (6) years’ job-related training and experience, including experience in the work of the department, or equivalent. Under management guidance, schedules work, assists with employee selection, reviews employee performance, administers work rules and recommends compensation. Must have intermediate to advanced experience in the following: Microsoft Excel, productivity, lean continuous improvement initiatives, and quality management to apply to department. Recommends equipment upgrades, staffing adjustments, process modifications and may recommend product or service modifications.
