HPIC Chief Executive Officer -- Position Profile COMPANY OVERVIEW Healthcare Providers Insurance Company (HPIC) is a member-driven property and casualty insurance company sponsored by and associated with the Mississippi Hospital Association (MHA). MHA Solutions Inc. (Solutions), a division of MHA, focuses on developing services and relationships to provide resources for the challenging healthcare issues providers face today. Solutions oversees two member-owned strategic partnerships, one of which is HPIC, which is owned and governed by its policyholder members. Formed in 2003 as a licensed reciprocal insurance company domiciled in South Carolina, HPIC was established with the intent of building an actuarially sound program to provide competitive insurance products for MHA-member hospitals, associated nursing facilities and sponsored physician subscribers. In 2016, it was re-licensed as a South Carolina traditional reciprocal insurance company with the South Carolina Department of Insurance and also became licensed in Mississippi. Its mission has remained focused on providing innovative and cost-effective insurance solutions to assist in safeguarding the assets of its owners while supporting the delivery of quality healthcare. Long-term financial stability, membership ownership and governance, and quality healthcare service are the three primary pillars of this organization. Today, HPIC provides risk management services and insurance coverages (general liability, workers’ compensation and professional liability) to more than 50 MHA hospitals and 500 physicians. MHA Solutions Insurance Agency was established to provide a full suite of property and casualty products for the medical industry. Continued growth and expansion into new markets is a strategic and top priority for the organization. HPIC, MHA and its subsidiary organizations, including Solutions, maintain a symbiotic relationship that is crucial to the alignment and success of the association and HPIC. Integrity Open communication Mutual respect and teamwork Resourcefulness and responsiveness Service exceeding expectations Accountability to members and to one another Commitment to learning The Chief Executive Officer of HPIC is responsible for the leadership, direction and oversight of HPIC operations, including daily operational processes, strategy, underwriting and policy services, marketing and sales, risk management, claims, compliance, board relations, team development and management, and community and agent relations. This leader will interface with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders, including the board of directors, MHA Solutions leadership, hospital administration and executive leadership, and other MHA subsidiary groups. The HPIC CEO will play a strategic and executional role to deliver on company objectives and goals. This executive will have significant interaction with board members and senior leaders of MHA and its subsidiary entities to ensure alignment of interests and goals from a hospital membership perspective. The CEO of HPIC will serve as a trusted guardian and ambassador of HPIC and the greater Mississippi Hospital Association. As such, high integrity, synergistic collaboration, and commitment to superior service and standards are crucial to success. CORPORATE STRUCTURE HPIC serves as a risk-bearing, full-service insurance company, writing professional and general liability and, as of 2016, workers’ compensation. Since its inception, HPIC has been the sponsored carrier of MHA and Solutions., as well as a strategic partner. A risk retention group (HPIC RRG) is available to write business in other states as opportunities become available. A TPA solution and an insurance agency serve as sister companies to HPIC, within Solutions. The CEO of HPIC is accountable to the HPIC Board of Directors and reports on an administrative basis to the President and CEO of MHA Solutions, who is a direct report of the President and CEO of Mississippi Hospital Association. The CEO of HPIC also serves as a member of the Operations Committee for MHA, MHA Solutions and HPIC. Thirteen people currently report to the CEO of HPIC, including a Director of Risk Control, a Director of Underwriting, Director of Workers Compensation and Director of Claims Management. Due to HPIC’s legal structure, these people are employed by MHA Solutions and leased to HPI Company (HPICO), the attorney-in-fact for HPIC. These employment distinctions have no bearing on HPIC’s productivity or overall operation. The MHA and HPIC offices are located together in Madison, Mississippi, about five miles outside of Jackson. The CEO position will be based at the MHA-HPIC office in Madison, Mississippi. SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES Holds executive responsibility for all operational functions of HPIC, including underwriting and policy services, marketing and sales, risk management, claims, compliance, board relations, team development and management, and community and agent relations Directs all aspects of the company’s activities to attain strong financial stability, maximum profit and long-range growth Leads the creation of annual operating plans to include budgets, long- and short-term strategic planning, and marketing plans that support directions set by the board Establishes and develops strong working and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to assist in achieving the strategic goals in an aligned and transparent manner Refines, builds upon and executes HPIC’s existing strategic plan Coordinates deployment and development of the company’s human resources Serves on the HPI Company board; acts as liaison between management and the HPIC, HPI Company and HPIC RRG boards Successfully leads, inspires, motivates, achieves growth and enhances company performance Establishes overall objectives, policies and plans subject to the approval of the boards Leads, coordinates and participates in strategic planning process Organizes and prioritizes resources to achieve company goals and objectives Develops and implements systems and plans to support goals and objectives Inspires and works alongside staff to achieve goals BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree required 10 to 15 years of management experience in a healthcare and or insurance operations environment, including at least five years of experience or exposure to professional liability (MPL, HPL) or workers’ compensation field Demonstrated understanding of a reciprocal insurance company and a member-driven association structure Knowledge of today’s healthcare and insurance issues, trends, markets, etc. Experience with or solid exposure to engagement with board of directors in a collaborative and strategic manner Alignment with and embodiment of the cultural values of MHA A highly collaborative and team-oriented approach Strong communication and relationship-building abilities at a senior executive and board level Effective management and strategic leadership skills Skill in identifying and recognizing strong talent in diverse environments Employment Type: Full Time Years Experience: 10 - 15 years Bonus/Commission: Yes
