Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
 
The Infrastructure Services team works together to provide operational support for network-based server and storage hardware and software. The Systems Engineer designs, manages, and administers networks and systems, including servers (physical and virtual) and storage. Activities include assessment, design, implementation, configuration, documentation, coordination, control, maintenance, troubleshooting, security, usage monitoring and the development of specialized procedures for systems. Responsible for capacity planning, tuning, system monitoring, system performance and problem resolution across all aspects of the infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Install, configure, maintain, and manage network devices (including firewalls, switches, wireless), servers, storage, and virtual systems and their associated operating systems
  • Evaluate and/or recommend procurement of network devices, servers, storage systems, peripheral equipment, and systems monitoring/alerting software
  • Investigate problems, identify their source, determine possible solutions, test and implement solutions
  • Guide complex problems from identification to resolution across different departments, employees and/or systems
  • Plan, implement and administer network security, including managing host/device security
  • Troubleshoot networks, systems, and applications to identify and correct malfunctions and other operational difficulties
  • Investigate, recommend, and install enhancements and operating procedures that optimize network/systems availability
  • Ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information being processed, stored, accessed or transmitted on the network
  • Document system problems and resolutions for future reference
  • Participate in audits of the company’s information technology infrastructure by external organizations
  • Participate in and contribute to the planning and execution of business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities
  • Provide technical expertise in researching, identifying, evaluating, recommending and/or developing information security systems, controls, methods, techniques and models
  • Contribute to the organization, processes, teams and product in a significant manner

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will possess strong practical knowledge and experience in the following areas:

  • Cloud-based infrastructure, especially migration of on-prem virtual systems to AWS
    • AWS certification is desirable
    • VMware Cloud on AWS experience desirable 
  • Network Engineering: Cisco ASA firewalls, Nexus core switches, perimeter defense mechanisms, UCS servers/blades. Cisco certification is a plus
  • VMware ESXi, vSphere and VMware Tools – Design, scaling, capacity management
  • NetApp storage systems, ONTAP OS, and cloud storage experience
  • TCP/IP-based LANs, iSCSI and Fiber Channel SANs, VPNs
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012/2016/2019 and Active Directory (DNS, DHCP, GPO management)
  • Current in Red Hat/CentOS Linux operating systems a plus
  • Federal Information Technology standards, guidelines, requirements, and programs such as NIST, DISA and DIACAP/RMF
  • Vulnerability management programs and patch management

EXPERIENCE:

  • Systems monitoring and management in a high-availability data center environment
  • Three years of AWS infrastructure experience, preferably including data center migration to AWS. 
  • Minimum of six years of experience with network, storage, VMware and systems engineering and administration in a mixed Windows/Linux environment

 

EDUCATION:   Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience

CERTIFICATION(S):  Two or more applicable industry-standard certifications

CLEARANCE: Must be eligible for and able to obtain federal ADP Level 2 clearance. Employment continuity is contingent upon passing an extended background check.

TRAVEL: None

JOB COMPLEXITY:  Works on projects and assignments of complex scope; exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Required to think and act independently to resolve complex issues while providing technical guidance, training and support using excellent written and verbal communication skills.

SUPERVISION:  Normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work with general instructions on new assignments. Expected to be a self-starter.   Does not supervise others 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Occasional off-hour/evening/weekend and/or overtime hours may be required.  The essential functions of this position may be performed remotely, or in a climate-controlled office environment.
