General Description: This is a paraprofessional position. The incumbent works with the Crisis Intervention Team to provide support and recovery-based intervention to individuals, and their families, experiencing a mental health emergency.
Organization: The Peer Counselor reports to the Program Coordinator and supervises no staff.
Along with mental health staff, provides face to face intervention to individuals experiencing a mental health emergency.
Uses personal experience and unique perspective as a consumer of mental health and/or substance use services to assist individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
Assists clients to understand illness, symptom identification and coping skills.
Utilizes recovery based principles and tools including the use of WRAP plans
Assists clients in accessing natural community supports.
Participates as a full member of multi-disciplinary team that includes mental health staff, medical staff and law enforcement personnel.
Provides clinical and administrative documentation consistent with licensure, accreditation and Medicaid standards.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Will work with clients and families who have histories of psychiatric behavior
Most of the work will occur in a hospital or office setting; occasional work in other secure locations within the community

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of signs and symptoms of mental illness, behavior management and early indicators of crises. Ability to identify and access needed services and resources in the community and effectively link clients. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and clients. Effective oral and written skills to complete documentation and lead clients in training activities.
Education, Experience and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required with a minimum of ninety (90) hours of classroom training in psychology, social work or related mental health field preferred. Requires personal experience with serious mental illness and own recovery - OR - Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.

Twelve-month probationary period
Flexible schedule, night and weekends required
