Primary Responsibilities


HDR is seeking an experienced Project Manager to pursue, win and deliver transportation planning and design projects in the Bay Area and in particular in the South Bay.  The position would be located in HDR's new Santa Clara office and play a key role in growing our practice.  The position would work closely with HDR leadership to heighten HDR's presence in the South Bay, strengthen our client relationships, develop project opportunities, identify potential hires and secure and deliver assignments with public agency clients including Santa Clara VTA, City of San Jose, Caltrain, Caltrans, among others.  The position will develop a robust internal network with HDR peers to leverage the full capabilities of our national business classes and cross sectors. The position will serve as a senior technical resource and provide QA/QC and production assistance support for transportation projects in Northern CA as requested. The industry is experiencing technological, social and demographic changes and in this position will provide clear communication to understand client needs, flexibility and innovation to identify new solutions and consistent mentorship of staff to develop their project delivery skills and provide leadership opportunities.


In the role of Senior Project Manager Engineering, we'll count on you to:

  • Plan, direct and monitor all aspects of large multidiscipline projects or medium-sized projects with high degree of technical complexity, typically in excess of $5 million and involving a large project staff
  • Produce and coordinate several projects concurrently
  • Establish client relations and be involved with marketing, contractual, design and production meetings
  • Conduct schematic, design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with Project Managers, appropriate technical professionals and other disciplines
  • Coordinate staffing and workload through entire project development to complete documents on schedule
  • Work with the Business/Accounting Manager, Project Controller or Company Controller and Department Manager or Managing Principal for project reviews
  • Implement QA/QC procedures
  • Execute training for personnel as established by strategic plans
  • Supervise large project staffs and act as mentor for less-experienced Project Managers
  • Maintain professional engineering registration
  • Perform other duties as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • 15 years project management experience
  • PE
  • MS Office and MS Project experience is required (Access experience would be plus)
  • Demonstrated business development and strategic planning skills
  • Good communication, leadership, planning and mentoring skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
