The Production Artist will manage various book design projects and will work closely with the art director and editors to ensure all print and digital designs meet high-quality standards. You will handle designs during the final stages of development to ensure accuracy and prepare them for print or digital publication. To be successful in this position, you will combine creative and technical skills to format books for print and create web graphics to support.
Responsibilities and ExpertiseTake an existing design idea and produces all necessary design components to complete a projectProduce, reformat, edit, and manage numerous short-term projects like reprints, book conversions and other art requests Occasionally produce interiors of books from manuscript to bound bookCreate digital 2D & 3D web ready imagery for Amazon and company website and other platforms for covers, books and card decksCommunicate with editors and other stakeholders relating to job specific design needsComplete all production work with each project including importing copy, creating tables, figures, retouching, editing images, and creating PDFs etc.Proofread and take editorial and design directionManage prepress process and create print ready files that are then uploaded to printers Follow deadlines to ensure timely publicationsArchive produced images and graphics according to company guidelinesUpdate traffic manager and Asana project management software on job statusAttend weekly art department meetingsMaintain a strong working knowledge of spiritual/self-help marketContinue on-the-job training and research to further grow their skills and expertise that apply directly to their daily workloadSkills, Knowledge & AbilitiesAbility to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environmentStrong written and verbal communication skills, including troubleshooting with print vendorsExcellent organizational and digital file management skillsCreativity skills with attention to detailAbility to take editorial and design directionWorking knowledge of color and typography, including font management software requiredProficient with Macintosh platformProficient with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat) and QuarkXPress and Microsoft Office Suite requiredWorking knowledge using communication, storage, and project management online software such as Asana, Slack, Box.com, and emailAbility to comply with company branding and design standards and maintain consistency represented in all published productsAbility to maintain and add to a comprehensive knowledge of standards, methods and practices for the production of printed material through continual research and practiceAble to provide a portfolio demonstrating a range from simple to complex production with an ability to adapt to an existing brand identity.Education and/or ExperienceBachelors degree or comparable certification in graphic designMinimum of three years of experience in graphic designPrior experience working with the various stages of book production, from initial design to bound book a plusExperience in book or publishing design, with a portfolio demonstrating layout of multi-page, text-heavy documents. Publications in the inspirational, self-help, religious, and diet/health industry would be most relevantRemote WorkDuring this pandemic, all Hay House employees are working remotely. Once it's safe to do so, we'll slowly return to our offices however we are in no rush to do this.
