Job Description

SCOPE:

Provides peer support services to participants in the Western Shelter HRC III and Housing Program; functions as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serves as a consumer advocate and may perform a wide range of tasks assisting peers in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process; contributes to the mission of Goodwill by helping to maximize the opportunities of program participants who are homeless and have other barriers to become more independent, working within the limits of established policies and following housing first guidelines.  

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Support participants in the development and utilization of their individualized crisis plans as necessary.
  2. Serve as a collaborative member of the treatment team working in conjunction with the participant to identify and determine the steps necessary to achieve individualized goals.  Participate in minimum of quarterly reviews of personal development plans to assess participant’s progress and determine if revisions to their individualized plans are necessary.
  3. Independently or with periodic assistance of clinical treatment team members, utilize and teach problem solving techniques with individuals and groups; discussions will be utilized where participants share common problems in daily living and methods they have employed to manage and cope with these problems.
  4. Support participant’s vocational choices and assist them in choosing a job that matches their strengths; aid the participant with overcoming job related anxiety through role play of interviews, soft skills, etc. Assist participants in building social skills. Model effective coping strategies and self-help techniques.
  5. Assist in obtaining services that suit the participant’s recovery needs by providing names of staff, community resources and groups that may be useful.  Inform participants about community and natural supports and how to use these in the recovery process.  Community resources may include, but not be limited to Social Security Office, Department of Children and Families, local YMCA, library, restaurants, clubs, sporting and/or exercise facilities, recreational facilities/activities, etc.
  6. Assist participants in developing empowerment skills and combatting stigma through self-advocacy.  Share one’s own experiences and what skills, strengths, supports, and resources used. When most appropriate, share one’s recovery story and demonstrate how they have directed their own recovery.
  7. Maintain detailed documentation/journal of daily activities, events, incidents, etc., occurring during shift; ensure accuracy.
  8. Maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by attending continuation education trainings, webinars, reading books, journals, and other relevant materials.  May present information learned during Team Meetings.
  9. Perform any range of department administrative assignments or special projects as requested. 

 


OTHER DUTIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  1. Demonstrate by words and actions a commitment to the Goodwill mission to help people with disabilities and other barriers to become self-sufficient, working members of the community.
  2. Perform or assist with any duties or operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements.
  3. Maintain safe work area and comply with safety procedures and equipment operating rules, keeping work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  4. Participate in any variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.

 


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Peer Specialist Certification preferred. Will assist in working towards certification if not already certified.  Expectation is that the individual will work towards attaining their certification. Formerly homeless encouraged to apply. 
  3. Have an understanding of the Housing First philosophy and standards.  Embrace the philosophy and apply Housing First standards while conducting daily job duties.
  4. Knowledge of the recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established mental health processes. 
  5. Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem solving strategies to support participants in self-directed recovery.
  6. Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental illness and the ability to assist the participant in managing symptoms through use of strategies such as positive self-talk.
  7. Knowledge and skill sufficient to use community resources necessary for independent living and ability to teach those skills to program participants.
  8. Excellent verbal communication skills and good written communication skills.
  9. Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment and take direction.
  10. Must have a valid Florida driver’s license, valid insurance, reliable transportation for travel to outlying locations and the ability to be insured under the company’s vehicle insurance policy.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Regular driving for facilitation of home visits, case conferences, etc. is required as well as attending meetings of community based facilities/agencies/participant homes and/or office based
  2. Regular sitting, standing, walking, stretching, reaching, bending, stooping and kneeling
  3. Regular cleaning apartments via education, modeling, and hands-on activities.
  4. Lifting and carrying 25 lbs.

 

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Use computer, standard peripherals and office equipment, kitchen appliances, yard maintenance equipment, personal and/or company car/van and safety equipment.

Pay Rate:  $13.00/hour
