Job Description

GPI is seeking an entry-level Environmental Scientist to join our team in the Columbia, MD office.  As a successful candidate, you will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of environmental consulting through the various design development phases of planning, design, permitting, construction, and post-construction monitoring.  You will gain valuable experience with state transportation agencies and county, municipal, and commercial clients throughout the region as part of a team that enjoys an engaging and collaborative work environment in an excellent location.


  • Assist our team in performing wetland and waterway delineations, forest stand delineations, tree assessments, stream geomorphic assessments, wetland and stream restoration design and monitoring, NEPA evaluations, design plan reviews for environmental commitment compliance, regulatory permitting, environmental construction compliance and post-construction monitoring of wetland and stream mitigation sites for state and county transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare technical reports, natural resource impact tracking, and the creation of basic graphics using GIS, GPS, and other software.  
  • Candidate must have excellent written, analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.


  • The ideal candidate must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, or a related degree from an accredited school, two (2) years minimum experience, and be able to immediately work in the United States. 
  • Experience in wetland delineation and functional assessment; habitat, biological, and water quality assessments; wetland and waterway regulatory permitting; forest conservation permitting; and erosion and sediment control is a plus.
  • Experience with the latest accepted methodologies for conducting natural resource evaluations including wetland delineation/functional assessments and habitat/biological/water quality assessments
  • Experience with the identification of plant species and soil properties within the mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
  • Experience with forest stand delineations and tree assessments.
  • Familiarity with NEPA evaluations and process.
  • Familiarity with construction permit compliance and erosion and sediment control.
  • Familiarity with GIS/CADD/GPS applications and Microsoft Office.
  • Be comfortable in both field and office environments.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Positive attitude and good work ethic with a desire to work in a collaborative environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration.
  • Possess a personal vehicle for use on or around a job site.
  • Read, write, and understand plans and direction given in the English language.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails, and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members.
  • Able to stand for approximately 3 hours minimum a day up to 8 hours.
  • Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.).
  • Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
  • Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds.
