Job Description

Position Overview:

The Director of Accounting directs the operations of the Accounting Department for a multi-company property & liability insurance organization and ensures the accounting requirements of the Company are met accurately and on a timely basis.

Major responsibilities include statutory reporting, management reporting including budgets and forecasts, accounting systems, cash receipts, accounts payable, policyholders’ accounts receivable maintenance and research, and federal income tax support; included are formulating policies, managing daily operations, and planning the use of material and human resources.

This position is a hybrid work environment with some in-office work located in Seattle, WA.

Pay Range and Benefits:

  • Pay Range $128,840 - $205,810 annually

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct the maintenance of the organization's general ledger and oversees monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close and financial reporting.
  • Direct and oversee activities in all of the organization's accounting functions, which may include general accounting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable, and establishes and implements strategies for reconciling accounts and reporting financial results. Develop and implement organizational accounting policies, ensuring compliance with Statutory Accounting.
  • Review financial statements, sales and activity reports, and other performance data.
  • Coordinate with management and other financial functions to develop organizational budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Establish and implement departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures, in conjunction with organization goals.
  • Manage staff and provide supervisory and technical accounting expertise as needed; promotes professional development of the accounting staff.
  • Continuously review existing financial and internal control systems for efficiencies and proper safeguards for assets; report deficiencies and recommendations to the CFO.
  • Communicate as appropriate with senior management regarding requests for information, or to report observations and insights as may be helpful to the organization.
  • Oversee the calculations for federal income tax provisions on a quarterly and annual basis along with required tax deposits; oversees the preparation of all supporting schedules required for the tax filing process.
  • Act as liaison with external auditing, actuary, insurance departments and other regulatory agencies.
  • Assist internal and/or external auditors with periodic auditing or the organization's financial records and statements.
  • Provide employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems or in resolving escalated complaints or disputes; evaluates employees' job performance and conformance to regulations and recommend appropriate personnel action.

Qualifications & Skills:

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or multiple years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Regular attendance, strong work ethic, excellent interpersonal skills, including effective communication and working well in a team environment, meet deadlines, strong customer service orientation.
  • Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
  • Microsoft Suite products.

PREFERRED:

  • Sage system experience; ADP experience; familiarity with investment securities
