Job Description

Givens Communities, a nationally recognized nonprofit senior housing organization in Asheville, is looking to hire a full-time salaried Vice President of Philanthropy. Responsible for developing, implementing, and growing a comprehensive philanthropic program to support and advance Givens Communities initiatives, including annual giving, capital development, and endowment growth. The position is charged with leadership for fundraising strategies and operations, for expanding the Givens culture of philanthropy, as well as the cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors, including making personal visits with residents, family, stakeholders, and friends to identify, steward, and solicit major gifts and increase the array of supporters of Givens, its communities and its outreach ministries. The position works with the Givens Communities CEO on all functions of the Philanthropy Advisory Board (future Foundation Board). It is an integral member of the senior leadership team as well as a resource to the Givens Estates, Inc. Board of Directors.

What you'll do:

  • Confer with CEO and Board of Directors to develop the overall strategic plan for Givens Philanthropy, including strategic focus areas, initiatives, and priorities for each Givens community, that reflects constituent input and builds a culture of giving that is in alignment with the Givens mission and vision
  • Confer with CEO and Board of Directors in setting various types of fundraising goals to achieve the initiatives of the overall strategic plan
  • Support CEO and Board of Directors as needed in executing Givens strategic initiatives
  • Oversee the implementation and operations of a comprehensive Givens Philanthropy program, including community-specific campaigns and endowments, and promotes capital needs, and other long-range funding opportunities
  • Oversee the planning and execution of a Givens Foundation and confer with CEO and Board of Directors in establishing a Philanthropy Committee and the future Foundation Board
  • Confer with CEO to develop a short and long-term plan for staffing the Philanthropy program and culture, and oversees the priorities, professional development, and performance reviews of program staff
  • Oversee all aspects of developing and implementing major/legacy gift and planned giving programs, including campaign-related activities, and participates directly in major donor cultivation and stewardship
  • Oversees and participates in researching, writing and submitting grant proposals and cases for support that reflect the funding priorities of the Givens Communities and for community-specific initiatives
  • Directs and oversees all policies, objectives, initiatives, branding and marketing of Philanthropy program activities and strategies for inspiring a culture of giving at Givens
  • Interfaces with residents, family members, stakeholders, affiliate organizations, vendors, partners, churches, civic and other aligned nonprofit organizations, and community leaders that support and extend the reputation and work of Givens Communities
  • Represent Givens and subsidiaries in public and private presentations to nurture donors, to uncover fundraising opportunities and/or to provide outreach opportunities in the community
  • Assist and support the CEO in all matters related to Governance of the Organization, such as Strategic planning and special projects
  • Collaborate with the Development Director and CEO as a Staff Liaison with the Nominating Committee, by assisting with Board Recruitment, orientation and other committee needs
  • Represent Givens on boards and community groups that align with Givens' mission
  • Institute and maintain a system for regular and meaningful recognition of donors and volunteers
  • Maintain and encourage professionalism in all charitable giving and outreach activities
  • Provide oversight to the Development Associate and the creation of Development materials and other hard and electronic media, such as the Annual Report and Givens Communities
  • Assist with the production of special events and projects, which both require development and public relation implications
  • Oversee reports and plans for communicating to donors and stakeholders about the use and impact of gifts
  • Collaborate with appropriate senior leadership team members, leads the annual budgeting process for the Philanthropy program, providing final budget recommendations to the CEO
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and effects changes required for continuous improvement
  • Implement, manage, and evaluate current operational processes and procedures in accordance with the standards and procedures set out by the organization.
  • Operate within established budgetary guidelines
  • Establish, implement, and evaluate goals and quality improvement initiatives for the Philanthropy team
  • Collaborate with Sales and Marketing to develop strategies, communication materials, and donation appeals for philanthropy
  • Establish metrics and dashboards for key areas of measurement and hold teams accountable to achieve or exceed these goals
  • Evaluate Philanthropy donor database system and oversees usage of system in tracking interactions with potential donors, in accurately capturing data on donations, in running effective reports, and in communicating gratitude or opportunities to donors or potential donors
  • Ensure record retention protocols and records are in compliance with state and federal regulations

What you'll need:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of eight years of fundraising experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Is a serious, thoughtful donor themselves with strong stewardship characteristics
  • Possesses an understanding of the donor cycle
  • Some experience in sales and marketing, or public relations preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of ecclesiastical practices and customs across varied religious organizations preferred
  • Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state and/or organizational requirements and is in good working order
  • Must be fluent in Microsoft Office Suite and donor database systems
  • Multi-year leadership experience in a philanthropy setting
  • Proven ability to work within an interdisciplinary setting with demonstrated ability to supervise, lead and motivate philanthropy team members
  • Complies with accepted professional standards and practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage in public/community activities to promote the mission of the organization and cultivate donor relationships
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional reports and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed with little supervision and self-motivated in fulfilling work tasks, obligations, and expectations
