About GirlTrek

GirlTrek is America’s largest health movement for Black women and girls. Far more than a walking group, GirlTrek is a life-saving sisterhood. We are a campaign to heal intergenerational trauma, fight systemic racism and transform Black lives. As women organize walking teams, they also mobilize community members to support advocacy efforts and lead a Civil Rights-inspired health movement. GirlTrek’s membership is currently at over one million and growing every day.

It started with two friends, T. Morgan Dixon and Vanessa Garrison in 2010. On November 18, 2020, GirlTrek inspired its one millionth member to walk for better health. This game-changing movement continues to attract new members. In Q1 of 2021 we acquired 50,000 new members per week. Today, GirlTrek has 1,521,776 members, representing 9% of the total population of African American women.

In addition to unprecedented growth, GirlTrek is influencing millions and shaping a new culture of health. In 2020 alone, GirlTrek stories and campaigns like the #DaughtersOf Conversation Series and Black History Bootcamp: A Walking Podcast earned 271 million impressions, 9 million online engagements and 300+ traditional media stories across 68 countries.

Director of Development Role

The Director of Development will join GirlTrek at a pivotal time in the organization’s growth with a new strategic plan and a new audacious goal to increase the life expectancy of Black women worldwide by 10 years in 10 years. That’s bold and transformative, so GirlTrek needs a leader who is equally passionate about reaching that goal and with a proven track record of generating a diverse revenue stream and collaborating with a team in support of this effort. Your job as Director of Development will be to forge new relationships to increase GirlTrek’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Director of Development also will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support. Specifically, the Director of Development will contribute the following:

Fundraising

  • Lead the overall creation and execution of the Development strategy for increasing revenue, meeting annual operating and revenue goals, and actively growing and diversifying funding streams to include individuals, corporations, foundations, government funding, and special events.
  • Support and partner with the leadership team and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
  • Have primary responsibility for development and execution of all proposals.
  • Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
  • Develop a moves management process to identify, cultivate, solicit, and sustain donor stewardship for GirlTrek’s individual, corporate, and foundation donors.

Relationship Management

  • Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
  • Develop and implement a communication strategy aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
  • Establish and maintain data-driven systems and structures to support weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting to internal and external stakeholders; leverage data systems for exemplary donor stewardship.
  • Oversee the development and execution of all fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship events.
  • Work closely with the Communications & Marketing team to create and execute print and digital communications, special events, and other efforts, as needed.

Strategic Planning

  • Collaborate with the COO and Chief of Finance to develop and implement GirlTrek’s financial strategy
  • Actively work with the leadership team to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.
  • Develop documentation of the moves management process that can be used to update or inform the build out of the moves management process in Salesforce.

Who You Are

We know that there are exceptional candidates who might not meet 100% of the qualifications outlined in job descriptions, but a successful candidate for this role will have most of the experiences, mindsets, and dispositions described below:

  • 8+ years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function, managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources.
  • Bachelor's degree required, graduate degree preferred.
  • Seasoned development leader with a mix of humility and command presence.
  • Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Highly organized and ability to wear multiple hats in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment; a driving force who manages toward clarity and solutions. You are dependable, and always deliver quality work.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Self-Starter who routinely knows when to "manage up,"can closely collaborate with the executive team, and sets ambitious goals with clear outcomes, manages her energy, time and resources toward high achievement.
  • Passionate about working with Black Women and wants to change the status quo to support and train these women to improve their health and mobilize in their communities.
