About the Department:

The College of Public Health (CPH) prepares students to become leaders and shape the public's health through academic excellence, research of consequence, community outreach, and interprofessional clinical practice. The College enrolls more than 1,900 undergraduate and 1,300 graduate students in its nationally-recognized offerings.

CPH Development provides strategic, active management of fundraising efforts that support the College and student, faculty, and staff success.

About the Position:

The Associate Director of Development plans and implements various strategies to raise funds from major donors and secure philanthropic support for the College of Public Health.

The Associate Director manages a portfolio of donors and prospective donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations, and is responsible for facilitating all phases of the donor engagement process, including initiating contact, cultivating and moving potential donors to solicitation and closure, creating solicitations, writing proposals, and stewarding donors. The position works collaboratively with key volunteers, CPH staff, Advancement staff, and other representatives to cultivate and solicit donors for priorities impacting student success.


  • Secures financial support for CPH by performing discovery work through 1:1 visits with annual fund and leadership annual giving donors, including upgrades of mid-level donors;
  • Manages a portfolio of 90-100 prospects;
  • Meets or exceeds metrics for visits, asks, and dollars raised, as determined by Central Advancement;
  • Actively researches and seeks out new prospective donors and demonstrates creativity in identifying new prospects;
  • Researches, develops, and writes funding proposals, appeal letters, and reports as required;
  • Participates in cross-unit collaborations that center donor interests when appropriate; and
  • Maintains accurate and timely records using Central Advancement data management and reporting systems.

  • Hosts recognition events for CPH donors with the goal of increasing engagement and support;
  • Works with CPH units to include donors in unit-level events for cultivation or stewardship purposes; and
  • Participates in fundraising events hosted by Central Advancement.

  • Develops an executive stewardship plan for CPH annual donors that includes creative and effective ways to increase engagement and support; and
  • Ensures CPH donors are included in university-wide stewardship events.

Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement:
  • Coordinates all CPH annual giving-level fundraising appeals in conjunction with CPH units and Central Advancement; and
  • Coordinates all CPH Alumni engagement events in conjunction with CPH units, CPH Alumni Board, and Central Advancement.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated success in moving donors efficiently through the donor engagement process, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship;
  • Demonstrated success closing five-figure gifts;
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing fundraising strategies;
  • Demonstrated experience working with a variety of funders, including corporations, foundations, and individuals;
  • Knowledge of donor engagement process, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals, corporations, and foundations;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of alumni, faculty, staff, donors, students, and colleagues throughout the university;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently;
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with appropriate discretion;
  • Attention to detail and follow-through; and
  • Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours for events and ability to travel (locally and nationally) as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience fundraising in higher education;
  • Experience fundraising for an annual fund, or initiatives focused on annual giving; and
  • Experience working with diverse populations including students, faculty, staff, community members, etc.
