Job Description


The Director of Pharmacy provides oversight and direction for all hospital pharmacy services including purchasing, receiving, storing, compounding and dispensing of patient medications.  The Director of Pharmacy will assure all legal, regulatory, and accrediting requirements are maintained at the best demonstrated practice.   This position is responsible for establishing and maintaining hospital policies and procedures concerning pharmacy operations.


  • Develop, maintain and update Pharmacy Policy and Procedure Manual
  • Establish and lead the Hospital’s P&T Committee
  • In conjunction with multidisciplinary team members, develop and maintain Antibiotic Stewardship program
  • Meet or exceed all accreditation bodies (DNV, TJC, CMS, BOP) standards related to pharmacy activities
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations
  • Assure process for patient and department charges – accurate and timely posting to accounts
  • Purchase drugs and supplies in accordance with Hospital policy and demonstrated best practices
  • Assure adequate control and documentation of controlled substances
  • Develop and perform process for all drug recalls
  • Develop and oversee preparation and delivery of medications throughout the Hospital – ensuring drug storage areas comply with all legal requirements
  • Establish standards and training for sterile product preparation in compliance USP 795/797/800 non-sterile and sterile preparation, including annual review of master formulation records
  • Design, implement and maintain medication safety program
  • Design, implement and maintain Pharmacy quality activities
  • Manage activities and performance of pharmacist, technicians, students and interns
  • Develop and implement a competency program for all Pharmacy staff, maintain appropriate records


  • Five years Director / Manager of Pharmacy experience within a hospital setting
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local regulatory requirements and accreditation standards (DNV, TJC, CMS, BOP)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Office and Pyxis systems
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills
  • Experience with staff and program development
  • Current CA Pharmacist License
