Western Colorado's Garfield County Public Library District (GCPLD) is primed and ready for its next big step forward! Garfield County, Colorado is a jewel within the Rocky Mountains. The Roaring Fork River winds its way through Carbondale until it meets the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs. From there, the Colorado River meanders along the I-70 corridor, from the world-famous Glenwood Hot Springs Resort to the beautiful alpine vistas of Parachute, and beyond.

In Garfield County you'll have ample outdoor activities to experience including skiing at nearby resorts (Sunlight, Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and more); fishing, rafting, hiking, biking, camping, rock climbing, and the list goes on! This is home to vast wilderness areas and popular hiking trails like Hanging Lake, a designated National Natural Landmark.

Visit the eclectic town of Carbondale where you can try out local breweries and explore art exhibits, or head west to visit Colorado's wine country in Palisade or the Colorado National Monument.

You can access several regional airports (Eagle, Grand Junction, or Montrose) within an hour or two, or utilize Denver International Airport which is roughly 200 miles east.

Core Role Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and administers operations of the Library District either directly or by empowering and directing leaders and staff at all levels; coordinates and evaluates the work of the District in accordance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and adopted policies and objectives of the Board of Trustees; openly provides guidance and leadership to ensure staff work is completed on time and accurately.
  • Fosters communication and partnership across divisions and departments to direct and coordinate strategic plans, goals, objectives, programs, and policies for the Board of Trustees and the District; develops administrative policies, procedures, and work standards to ensure strategic plans, goals, and objectives are met, and services are provided in an effective, efficient, and economical manner.
  • Creates a culture that recognizes and rewards staff contributions; collaborates with District leaders to drive the District to become an employer of choice.
  • Oversees the preparation of the District's annual budget and periodic budget adjustments for Board consideration and approval; conducts studies and makes oral and written budget presentations; authorizes directly or through staff, budget transfers, expenditures, and purchases; explores potential revenue sources; collaborates with the Library Foundation on fund raising activities; pursues grant funding opportunities; provides information regarding the financial condition and needs to the Board of Trustees.
  • Develops and standardizes policies, procedures, and methods to improve and continuously monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of assigned programs, projects, service delivery methods, and procedures; assesses and monitors workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identifies best practices and opportunities for improvement.
  • Partners with Human Resources to support the employee lifecycle including the selection, training, professional development, work evaluation and offboarding of District staff; oversees the implementation of effective employee relations and related programs; provides policy guidance and interpretation to staff.
  • Ensures the Board is kept informed of District functions, activities, issues, programs, and financial status, and of legal, social, and economic issues affecting District activities; maintains open communication and transparency with staff and the Board; provides regular updates to the Board Chair and other standing or ad hoc committees.
  • Prepares and recommends long-term and short-term plans for District programs, services, and funding; directs the development of specific proposals for action regarding current and future District needs; participates in Library Board meetings including presenting reports and policy matters for Board review.

Education & Experience

  • Relevant master's degree and minimum of ten (10) years of progressive library experience, with at least four (4) years in a leadership capacity.
  • Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) preferred.
