Position Title: Senior Research Chemist

Location: Research Triangle Park, NC, U.S. Army Research Office (ARO)

Schedule: M-F 8-hour schedule with 30-minute lunch between the hours of 0600-1800

Start Date*: December 2022 *Pending contract award

Clearance Required: Active DOD Secret security clearance (T3)

Salary/Status: Competitive salary + benefits; Full-time, exempt


GC Associates requires a Senior Research Chemist at Research Triangle Park, NC to support the U.S. Army Research Office (ARO), which executes the Army extramural basic research program in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, life sciences), the engineering sciences (mechanical, electrical, materials, environmental), and information sciences (computing, mathematics, and network). The mission of ARO is to invest in scientific research focused on the needs of the Army so that discovery research targeted at developing advances will insure continuing technological superiority. The scope of ARO research is broad and decidedly long range with system application solutions 10 to 15 or more years away. ARO is organized as a part of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL). ARO manages much of the Army's extramural investments in basic and applied scientific and engineering research. The Contractor shall provide non-personal advisory and assistance (A&AS) professional scientific and engineering services that support this mission.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Act as the Scientific Advisor for the ARO Reactive Chemical Systems Program to advise the Acting Chemistry Program Manager overseeing the reactive chemical systems program.
  • Aid in assessing, developing, and promoting cutting-edge polymer research. b) Gather information and prepare reports on budgetary matters.
  • Provide advice regarding the annual evaluation of the Reactive Chemical Systems Program, including reviewing white papers, proposals, progress, research plans, and participation in site visits.
  • Develop technical and informational documents that describe research program highlights, accomplishments, activities, and potential areas of improvement and disseminate to the Army and DoD.
  • As opportunities arise, visit local universities to conduct meetings and gather technical information.
  • Identify new scientific opportunities that have Army relevance and have a high potential to transform future Army capabilities by attending scientific and DoD meetings, by reading the literature, by talking to academia, by reading and evaluating proposals, and by technical assessments and recommendations for MURI and SETA topic development.
  • Coordinate with government labs, academia, and industry to identify promising transition paths for Reactive Chemical Systems Program results.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Master's Degree in organic, inorganic, or polymer chemistry or a closely related field.

Experience/Skills:

  • Must have at least five (5) years of program management support experience
  • Must be familiar with the objectives and evaluation of Army and DoD related research solicitations and special programs.
  • Must have experience processing and executing research funds, monitoring financial records and statistics, translating budget reports into functional formats, and updating financial and contractual data.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of tasks which include but are not limited to:
    • Scientific Advisor for the ARO Reactive Chemical Systems Program to advise the Acting Chemistry Program Manager overseeing the reactive chemical systems program. The individual will aid in assessing, developing, and promoting cutting-edge polymer research.
    • Gather information and prepare reports on budgetary matters. c) Provide advice regarding the annual evaluation of the Reactive Chemical Systems Program, including reviewing white papers, proposals, progress, research plans, and participation in site visits.

  • Must be articulate, adaptable, and able to work with a variety of research professionals in academia, government, and industry.
  • Must be able to work with diverse teams and provide quality input and recommendations aimed at improving overall program success.
