Job Description

Frost Brown Todd LLC, a regional law firm of 1000+ legal professionals and staff in fifteen markets, is seeking an experienced Chief Data and Innovation Officer (CDIO) to join our firm.

The Chief Data and Innovation Officer will be a key member of the Firm’s leadership team working collaboratively with the C-suite team and attorneys to identify and execute on innovative data initiatives across a variety of use cases.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Building a high-performance business professional team structure to support the firm’s data strategy initiatives.  Developing and fostering an environment that rewards strong performance and teamwork, professionalism, and responsiveness. 
  • Driving the development of a combined strategy and information architecture that will tie together information governance, data governance, and data infrastructure in a sustainable, business requirements-driven program. 
  • Working with the Firm's practice group leaders and industry teams to identify business opportunities to use data to drive strategic decision making and improve the efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of legal services to the Firm’s clients.
  • Improving the productivity and efficiency of both the practice of law and supporting functions within the Firm.  This includes innovations in processes, automation, and legal work execution.
  • Leading the Firm's efforts to develop and implement taxonomies and ontologies to model the domains of specific areas of law and to better understand and predict the outcome of matters, phases, and tasks.
  • Identifying opportunities to leverage existing and emerging technologies into specific practices, as applicable, and coordinating pilot and proof of concept programs, including drafting specifications, evaluating software, and testing of products and services.
  • Serving as a key liaison for clients’ legal operations leaders to better understand their perspectives and needs, get the right lawyers and administrative department leaders involved, and coordinate with the appropriate firm personnel to deliver value and services accordingly.   

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or business.
  • JD and/or advanced data science degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of legal industry experience.
  • 3+ years of experience with building, directing, and managing a data and/or innovation function for a law firm, including experience developing business information strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to act in an intrapreneurial fashion, identifying, internally selling, and implementing solutions without explicit direction.
  • Experienced people manager with cultural sensitivity and expertise in recruitment, professional development, performance management, conflict resolution, and other aspects of building, developing, and motivating a team.
  • Proven ability to identify opportunities to leverage existing and emerging technologies into specific practices, as applicable, and coordinating pilot and proof of concept programs, including drafting specifications, evaluating software, and testing of products and services.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement with strong influencing and communication skills and the ability to tailor styles to suit the audience.
  • Demonstrated success with building strong relationships quickly with a wide range of people at all levels, and with the confidence, credibility, and gravitas to work effectively.
  • Knowledgeable about corporate legal operations departments; demonstrated ability to interface with corporate legal operations teams.
  • Awareness and understanding of the business of law and relevant practices, including law firm financial and performance metrics, and the relationship between effective matter management, profitability, and delivering value to clients.
  • Experience using visualization tools, e.g., MS Power BI, Tableau.
  • Exposure and experience working in an agile product management and software development environment.Flexibility to work outside standard business hours, travel to other firm offices and attend relevant conferences and meetings.
