Position Overview
The Project Engineer designs, tests, and implements packaging designs that are an integral part of the organization’s Product Development process. Responsible for the reviewing and continuous improvement of existing packaging designs. This position develops, designs, and tests standards and guidelines for developing packaging solutions for the organization’s products. Additionally, this role partners with internal resources and packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging goals.
Essential Functions
- Leads technical evaluation of new projects and products to determine fit into existing platforms and systems
- Leads technical feasibility of new projects by collecting inputs from cross-functional team members including Operations, Quality, Supply Chain and Product Development.
- Oversees and manages complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing. Develops, configures, and optimizes manufacturing processes from inception, through validation and start up.
- Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
- Supports plant operations through innovation, technical packaging expertise, and continuous improvement efforts
- Leads transition and proper hands off to Operations after product launches.
- Troubleshoots new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
- Is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of capital budgets to purchase, improve, or maintain equipment and processes as needed. This position is required to withhold the allotted budget for all projects.
- Leads and manages capital projects as needed including new equipment/process installations, plant layout and design, manufacturing automation projects and maintenance related projects.
- Establishes standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluates and select packaging suppliers/vendors.
- Identifies and implements cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
- Responsible for maintaining a food safe work environment and in the event it is perceived that it is compromised, action is to be taken which includes stopping the process and notifying the lead, assistant supervisor, or supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Skills & Knowledge
- 5+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging.
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering is preferred (Food Process and Industrial accepted).
- Demonstrable proficiency in CAD software is needed.
- Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards is essential.
- Experience in commercializing new food processing technology and processes.
- Experience in leading projects from concept through validation: equipment specification, installation, commissioning, qualification, and verification.
- Experience in sanitary design, USDA, and FDA food processing as well as HACCP, OSHA, and other food production standards.
- Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
