The FOSS Shift Coordinator (SC) position plays a key role on the school leadership team in monitoring classes for quality and consistency, providing guidance and performance feedback to team members, providing work direction for Deck Assistants, assist in managing the schools’ administrative functions such as scheduling, training, and events, communicating with students, parents, and guests, maintaining class supplies and deck organization, maintenance of equipment, and general cleanliness of the facility.
The Shift Coordinators are often a first point of contact and should demonstrate the FOSS core beliefs including the Lightbulb service model to ensure the school is a welcoming, professional, and inspiring environment for learning. The hours for a Shift Coordinator will vary from week to week depending on the facility needs and should be prepared to work on deck or in the water assisting, if necessary, in unique situations.
FOSS provides our new leaders the training resources to deliver quality services and pursue excellence in their role. To achieve these results, there is a three-month manager in training program to set you up for success.
Shift Coordinator Training Program: (2-3 months)
The Shift Coordinator will spend the first 6 weeks learning key roles including Swim Teacher, Enrollment Specialist, and Deck Assistant. The next 3-5 weeks will learn the Shift Coordinator role and on-the-job practicing. Through these rotations, Shift Coordinator’s will learn to manage FOSS methods and processes and build strengths in competencies such as business acumen, time management, organizational execution, and accountability, and developing, motivating, and managing talent.
Main Responsibilities as a Shift Coordinator:
The following essential functions represent the primary work performed; however, the SC may be asked to assist with projects or tasks not detailed here but fall within the scope of this role.
- Understand class enrollment planning process including private and preview classes while guiding swim teacher staff on process.
- Assist school leaders in addressing customer questions and concerns to ensure FOSS customer service standards are achieved.
- Learn and understand all swim training including basic and advanced skills to function as a hands-on teacher.
- Understand and apply FOSS methods for class management lesson planning.
- Understand and conduct evaluations for the facility and teacher curriculum.
- Assist and shadow peer roles like the Office Manager and School Director.
Secondary Responsibilities of a Shift Coordinator:
- Plan for and assist in achieving both financial and operational goals including swim instruction, class enrollment, facility maintenance, customer overall satisfaction, and quality of teaching
- Understand class staffing model and align training and quality controls to ensure performance and service standards
- Assist school leaders and corporate staff in talent development and management, including performance conversations, employee engagement and relations
- Learn pool pump room procedures and maintenance schedules and assist in maintenance and repairs as necessary
- Act as a FOSS brand ambassador by assisting with planning and attending school and community events, including school in-service meetings
- Build trusted and effective relationships to advance an organizational culture that lives our mission, demonstrating a high level of collaboration and accountability
- Collaborate with internal teams to develop effective and efficient organizational policies, processes and programs that support our growth strategies
Minimum qualifications, skills, and abilities:
- Previous training, college course work or hands-on experience in general business management sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position
- Previous experience in customer service, retail, or general business management role
- Desire to learn new or strengthen business and financial acumen
- Curiosity to learn new concepts and quickly apply learnings and teach or mentor others
- Ability to collaborate with others to identify and solve issues or make proactive recommendations and lead through influence
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to manage confidential and sensitive information, possess a high degree of personal integrity and sound judgment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively present ideas to internal teams and external partners or vendors
- Ability to use data to drive decision making
- Availability to work evenings and weekends
- Ability to participate in organizational, employee or community engagement events off premises, as necessary
While performing the duties of this position, incumbents may be required to do all or some of the following, with or without accommodation:
- Ability to be in the water engaging students in curriculum
- Work in an indoor pool facility that could be humid and damp
- Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing 25-50 pounds without assistance and heavier lifting or movement tasks with assistance
- Speak with others using clear and professional language
- Move up and down stairs, service ramps, and/or ladders, crawl, or stoop
- Ability to temporarily work in cramped area, such as under a desk while performing some tasks such as installing hardware or troubleshooting issues
- Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, if necessary
- Review documents, blueprints, computer monitors or displays with potentially small print
- Operate a computer, phone and other common office tools or controls
- Mentally focus on tasks and apply sound reasoning and judgement
