About Formic LabsA holistic, predictive understanding of biology has substantial potential to revolutionize medicine and bioengineering. To accelerate our understanding of biology, Formic Labs is building an AWS-inspired platform for life sciences R that alleviates many of the bottlenecks to integrating knowledge, from wet lab experimentation to bioinformatics, simulation, and data visualization. Our platform will supercharge biomedical scientists and engineers by providing investigators with approachable, integrated access to sophisticated data and tooling: Simplify and accelerate science by relieving investigators of the minutiae of executing protocols and managing their results, such as finding and installing tools, converting formats, and setting up workflow engines and data warehouses Increase the reliability of results by faithfully and reproducibly executing protocols Enable more holistic investigation such as by facilitating more complex protocols that cut across traditional silos, enabling investigators to easily scale screens to millions of conditions, and enabling investigators to easily analyze large data sets Promote collaboration by standardizing protocols and their results and making them shareable To enable the integration of knowledge across biological systems and scales, our platform will ultimately become an open marketplace that connects investigators with material and tool developers.Our long-term goals are to use this platform to create simulations of entire cells and tissues.
These revolutionary simulations will accelerate basic science, drug development, and bioengineering by supercharging biomedical scientists and engineers.Formic Labs is led by Michael Antonov, a co-founder of Oculus, and well-funded by Formic Ventures.Job summaryThe Head of Simulation will be a key member of the executive team, responsible for developing a platform for multiscale modeling and working with customers to use this platform to develop comprehensive models of entire cells and tissues. The Head of Simulation will be responsible for architecting the platform, working with our engineering team to build the platform, working with customers to build simulations, building a simulation team, and taking predictive simulations from concept to customer.RequirementsMust haves Passion for using simulation to accelerate biomedical science and engineering Ability to translate the needs, wants, and motivations of biomedical scientists and engineers into m Hands-on experience with building and applying simulations that predict cellular phenotypes from mathematical, physical, and chemical principles Knowledge of multiple modeling approaches such as logical, constraint-based, kinetic, stochastic, spatial, and agent-based simulation Knowledge of model design, calibration, validation, and annotation Knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, such as metabolism, genetics, gene regulation, and signaling Ability to creatively solve complex, multi-faceted modeling and simulation problems Ability to systemize, integrate, and scale modeling to comprehensive models of entire cells and tissues Ability to work with experimentalists and software engineers Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills Experience building and growing teams Self-starter with a great ability to execute Nice to haves Experience with big data, high-dimensional models, and/or high-performance simulation Experience with data integration, model composition, and/or hybrid simulation Knowledge of wet lab experimentation, bioinformatics, and/or data visualization Experience with developing simulation methods and tools Experience with standards, ontologies, repositories, and building scientific communities for modeling and simulation Experience with software engineering LocationFormic Labs is located in South San Francisco, CA. The employee may split their time between in-person and remote work.
