Job Description

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.

The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure and recreation of it's citizens.

Job Purpose

The position performs work developing, coordinating, and maintaining digital mapping utilizing GIS in support of the Grounds Management Roads crew.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop digital mapping utilizing GIS software
  • Complete data collection projects using Global Position Systems (GPS) unit
  • Collect point data for various District utilities including storm water systems, streets, and flood plain using GIS ArcMap
  • Maintain and update the District's CPS data
  • Perform other duties as required

Education and Expereince Required

Additional Information: Must be 18 years of age or older by the first day of employment. Bring lunch and water daily for working in the field. Safety boots and safety glasses required. Reimbursement available for safety boots and prescription safety eye wear.

Hours: April - September (Flexible); Monday-Friday 6:45am-2:45pm

Starting Pay: Starts at $17.00 an hour

Preferred Experience: Experience in the operation of maintenance equipment preferred.

Special training or other license, certification,etc.: Progress toward the completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Geography Information Management, Urban and/or Regional Planning, Computer Science or related field; Working knowledge of ESRI's ArchInfo and ArcView software; Working knowledge of AutoCad, Trimble GPS hardware and software systems, and ERDAS software desirable; must have a valid Driver's License.

Skills In: Working independently to conduct field surveys and data collection; communicating effectively, verbally and in writing; prioritizing and managing multiple tasks and projects; reasoning logically regarding operational aspects of database applications; trouble-shoot software and hardware; understand and follow verbal or written instructions; maintaining effective working relationships.
