Ironworker (Position Travels)

FLSA: Hourly / Non- Exempt

REPORTS TO: Superintendent


The Ironworker is responsible for the lay, fit and fabrication of structural steel, plate and pipe according to blueprint plan design.


  • Read specifications and blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required.

  • Set up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural steel members.

  • Hoist steel beams, girders, and columns into place using cranes, using hand signals and tag lines.

  • Pulls, pushes or pries steel members into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting device.

  • Forces members into final position, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks and hand tools.

  • Aligns bolt holes in steel member using drift pins or spud wrenches.

  • Verifies vertical and horizontal alignment of members using plumb bob and level.

  • Bolts align members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place.

  • Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts following blueprints using various bolts, nuts, washers and torqing or welding.

  • Cuts and welds steel members to make alterations using oxyacetylene welding equipment and supplies.

  • Adhere to the general safety plan.

  • Compare and see differences in size, shape and form of lines, figures and objects.

  • Picture solid objects from drawings or diagrams.

  • Rate information using standards that can be measured or checked.

  • Record keeping up to date (times cards etc.)

  • Perform work of a quality level consistent with Fives North American Construction Services standard practice.

  • Conform to OSHA and Company safety plan including wearing personal protective devices.


  • Must have experience in blueprint reading, layout, shop tools – oxy/acetylene torch, various hand tools, drill press, saw, ironworker, etc.

  • Performs tasks involving physical labor at customer sites.

  • Loads, unloads, lifts, and moves materials.

  • Handles slings and shackles up to 80 pounds, 10+ times per day.

  • Works on multiple job sites installing and refurbishing Combustion Furnaces

  • Works with various power and hand tools.

  • Current Weld Certification

  • Basic understanding of construction principles and procedures

  • Willingness to work in high-stress environment

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • OSHA 10 hour certified

  • Must be reliable, hard worker and able to work in a team environment

  • Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

  • Work experience in the Aluminum, Steel, Forging, Ductile Iron, Petrochem, Foundry or Automotive industries is a plus.


  • HS Diploma or GED Certificate
  • Vocational School Training or Apprenticeship Training Preferred


  • Travel Requirement: 80%.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent


Sits: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily

Stands: Continuously 5.5 - 8 hours daily

Walks: Continuously 5.5 - 8 hours daily

Drive: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily

Lift/Carry 0-10 lbs.: Frequently 2.5 - 5.5 hours daily

Lift/Carry 10-20 lbs.: Frequently 2.5 - 5.5 hours daily

Lift/Carry 20-50 lbs.: Frequently 2.5 - 5.5 hours daily

Lift/Carry 50- over 100 lbs.: Frequently 2.5 - 5.5 hours daily

Reach Above: Frequently 2.5 - 5.5 hours daily

Bend/Stoop: Frequently 2.5 - 5.5 hours daily

Use Hands for Pushing/Pulling: Frequently 2.5 - 5.5 hours daily
