Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and supervising a team of four, the Director of Human Resources provides strategic leadership and functional expertise to drive HR departmental expectations while ensuring compliance with Agency policies, mission and strategic plan.
The Director of Human Resources is responsible for managing and directing all Human Resources functions including employment, compensation, benefits, training, employee relations and services in support of Agency objectives to establish Five Acres as an employer of choice in the nonprofit community.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
- In coordination with Chief Administrative Officer, establish the strategic direction for Human Resources; develop and implement human resource policies and procedures that support goals, ensuring compliance with federal and state labor and related laws.
- Direct and manage recruitment, selection and other employment activities for all positions; recruit and interview management staff; work with managers to forecast personnel needs and budgets; provide advice and guidance to supervisory staff in making employment-related decisions.
- Develop, implement and administer Five Acres’ compensation, benefits and pension programs including development of budgets, negotiation of costs, and effective management of budgets; monitor the marketplace for changes in compensation and benefits practices and recommend changes to ensure Five Acres maintains a competitive stance.
- Ensure that the organization’s equal employment practices comply with laws; ensure all supervisory staff are trained to support these policies.
- Work with managers to determine staff development and training needs; supervise development and implementation of appropriate training programs; monitor results of training to ensure these are meeting organization goals.
- Develop and recommend implementation of all human resources policies; publish policies and provide associated training as needed.
- Gather data; analyze trends regarding turnover, hiring, promotions, workers’ compensation claims, unemployment claims, separations and grievances to determine action needed to adjust unfavorable trends. Prepare periodic and ad-hoc reports for Executive Management and the Board Human Resources Committee.
- Supervise maintenance of personnel files and records including HRIS, ensuring confidentiality and security of same; provide routine and special reports; and ensure preparation and submission of employee information to government agencies as required by law.
- Develop a diverse, innovative, cooperative and well-trained workforce. Forecast future department needs and develop clear objectives and processes, as needed.
- Advise supervisor of any major liability risks that could impact Five Acres, as needed.
Oversee and participate in employee relations functions:
- Participate in the resolution of employee grievances; counsel employees on employment-related issues.
- Counsel supervisory staff in performance management and resolving employee problems.
- Monitor employee counseling and disciplinary procedures; monitor and approve involuntary terminations.
- Participate in the development of the department and general human resources budgets; review and control expenditures to comply with budget.
- Develop and maintain working knowledge of labor and related laws, industry trends, and effective human resources practices through participation in seminars and classes, membership in professional organizations, reading about new laws and best practices, and maintaining contacts in the industry; consult with legal counsel as necessary.
- Visit all of Five Acres’ facilities and programs on a periodic basis to identify training needs, monitor morale, and the general health of human resources; manage and implement employee services such as the employee communications, and employee recreational and morale enhancing social events.
- Maintain an attitude of confidentiality regarding children, families and operations of the Agency.
- Exercise good judgment in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
- Perform managerial duties including interviewing applicants for employment; assigning and reviewing progress of assignments; conducting performance appraisals and recommending salary increases; and developing higher levels of expertise in staff members by encouraging further education, participation in seminars and providing learning opportunities within the department.

- The Director of Human Resources must be a good problem-solver who is comfortable with the challenges of managing a large team of dedicated professionals and multi-site, 24/7 operations. The successful candidate will have an open-door policy and be accessible to staff.
- The individual will be a good listener, be patient and understanding of the Agency’s environment and various work schedules. The Director of Human Resources will have a customer-service orientation and will be well-disciplined, flexible and adaptable.
- The successful candidate will understand and value the importance of diversity and demonstrate sensitivity to the different cultures represented among the children, their families and staff.
- The Director of Human Resources should have discernable judgment and the ability to make sound business decisions. Proven management skills and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team will be important. A positive attitude and the ability to inspire others and positively contribute to staff morale and engagement will be valued.
- Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in a management-related area. SHRM certification is required, California credential strongly preferred.
- A minimum of ten years of increasingly responsible human resources management experience is preferred, including four years as a supervisor.
- Employee relations experience and a working knowledge of all human resource activities and associated state and federal regulations (e.g. COBRA, Wage and Hour laws, Fair Labor Standards Act, Equal Employment regulations, OSHA, Workers’ Compensation, American with Disabilities Act, FMLA, CFRA, etc.) are essential and expected.
- Current knowledge of California labor laws is strongly preferred.
- Experience in a human services or non-profit institution would be beneficial, not required.
- Demonstrated leadership skills sufficient to work collaboratively with leaders across various programs and departments.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written. Bilingual skills in Spanish/English will be highly valued.
- Ability to be flexible and work in a changing environment.
- Must have a valid California Driver License, proof of automobile insurance and meet the Agency’s safe driver guidelines.
- Sensitivity to the different cultures represented among the students, their families and staff.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures of the Agency.
- Ability to model positive behaviors and Agency values.
