Job Description

First Mode draws on the exceptional talent and creativity of its multidisciplinary team to solve the toughest problems on and off the planet. We help companies, governments, and individuals from the earliest stages of problem definition to prototype creation and demonstration. A continual desire to discover and invent has led our team to drill into the unknown surface of Mars, electrify large industrial equipment, and apply remote sensing technologies to water conservation.

While each project is unique, we typically meld together robotics, automation, systems engineering, modeling and simulation, and advanced fabrication to create a new future across many industries. If you have exceptional talent and a vision for the future, we want to talk.

First Mode is seeking to grow its skillset in manufacturing engineering and production system design. As a member of the technical staff with broad experience in design for manufacturability, manufacturing methods, and overall production system design of heavy equipment, you will be an integral member of our product design team helping bring first-in-kind zero-emission platforms from the drawing board into service, guiding projects on the scale-up from prototype to production. While work will involve advocacy for the production of parts to advocacy for the assembly of large-scale vehicles, the focus will be on the higher-level production of assemblies and vehicles.

    • Develop production layouts and processes for managing the flow of parts, people, tools, and information
    • Conduct trade studies on different production system designs and manufacturing methods, equipment, and tools
    • Represent manufacturing stakeholders and related disciplines such as quality, safety, ergonomics, operations, and maintenance, during design development, advocating for manufacturing best practices
    • Support make/buy decisions, evaluating the suitability of production houses, and serve as the primary interface between the design team and the production house
    • Develop work breakdown structures, production process, operating and installations plans, and specifications
    • Estimate process durations and resource requirements
    • Develop production tooling requirements and specifications and lead acceptance testing and commissioning
    • Work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering, or related degree program with equivalent experience
    • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing of heavy industrial equipment

    Desired Qualifications

    • Experience in early-stage product and production system development
    • Experience in most and an understanding of the fundamentals of the responsibilities described above
    • Experience with 3D CAD software, creating and interpreting design drawings and specifications, and producing installation plans and drawings
    • Experience and/or familiarity with common manufacturing skills such as Six Sigma, Lean, Theory of Constraints, and Root Cause Analysis
    • Experience with production methods related to assembly of heavy equipment, such as heavy construction, agricultural or mining vehicles
    • Experience with the assembly and integration of large-scale power electronics
    • Experience mentoring early career manufacturing engineers
    • Ability to write and speak clearly about technical subject matter
    • Flexibility and responsiveness in a fast-paced, dynamic, small team environment

    Additional Requirements

    • Occasional travel within the United States and internationally to represent First Mode to its customers, vendors, and partners and to coordinate with the FM Team in Australia
