Job Description: Instructional Coach Felton’s Early Care and Education Programs Agency Overview Founded in 1889, the Felton Institute is the oldest non-profit social-services provider in the bay area. Our mission is to strengthen families by providing caring, effective, and innovative social services, with special emphasis on the needs of low-income families, children, and the elderly and individuals with disabilities, thus improving the quality of life for all San Franciscans. Program(s) Description Felton Institute has been providing comprehensive early care and education services in San Francisco since 1971. Felton now has ECE programs in SF’s Mission, Bayview and Visitation Valley neighborhoods; and offers a school-readiness program for infants, toddlers and preschoolers (2 weeks to 6 years old). Felton’s ECE programs include nine (9) Infant / Toddler classrooms and ten (10) preschool classrooms, which serve approximately 350 children, full day/ year-round. These multicultural, educational programs provide a nurturing, developmentally challenging, and inclusive environment for very young children of low/moderate income families. He/ She will have exceptional leadership, interpersonal skills, administrative and communication skills that support the integration of services within Felton’s Early Care and Education Programs. The ideal candidate will have a strong and clear vision that frames the work they will do in supporting ECE educators, and also strong leadership in coaching, curriculum and pedagogy. He/she will be solution focused, a systems and strategic thinker and be very comfortable with change, growth, and innovation. Focus: Provides pedagogical coaching to Felton's Early Care and Education programs, providing connections with our mission, vision and core values in a child-centered, emergent, play based curriculum philosophy. BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The main areas of focus for the Instructional Coach is to support with the development of a child-centered, play based curriculum, implementation of authentic assessments via Learning Stories, coaching and job embedded professional development efforts. The role of the Instructional Coach is to build teacher capacity and their understanding of instructional practices as it relates to the California Learning Foundations and Frameworks (Infant/Toddler/preschool) as appropriate. The instructional coach is a learner who models continuous improvement, lifelong learning, and goes above and beyond to ensure children’s success. He/she will work collaboratively with members of the Felton’s ECE Programs Teaching & Learning and the leadership teams. The Instructional Coach will promote reflection, provide guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration and common issues of concern. He/she will be responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching and providing feedback to teachers. The instructional coach will demonstrate and model a passion for urban education reform and leadership with an equity and social justice lens. As the Instructional Coach, this role will lead all coaching collaborations alongside the Education Director and support the quality assurance across all Felton Early Care and Education Programs. He/She will be responsible for leading a collaborative space between all Felton external coaches to ensure alignment with curriculum and pedagogy across all Felton Early Care and Education Programs. He/She will support the ECE leadership with quality readiness, coach and train Felton’s ECE teaching teams before, during, and after all external quality assessments/monitoring. In addition, implement an audit schedule that assesses Felton’s ECE programs compliance by reviewing and analyzing monthly/quarterly/annual logs and management checklists to determine consistent fulfilment of required Felton’s ECE operation standards. 1. Support ECE leadership with quality readiness, coach and train Felton’s ECE teaching teams before, during and after all external quality assessments/ monitoring visits. 2. Provide technical expertise relative to quality assurance and standards related to CDE requirements, DRDP’s, child portfolio’s, ERS, CLASS, QRIS other quality standards. 3. Track performance and monitor quality assurance progress objectively monthly/ quarterly based on internal key indicators required by organization, regulatory agencies and community care licensing. 4. Conduct quarterly audits and assess Felton’s ECE programs compliance by reviewing and analyzing monthly/ quarterly/ annual logs and management checklists to determine consistent fulfilment of required Felton’s ECE operating standards. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROLES: 1. Build strong relationships with teachers, leadership, and external partners and coaches. 2. Provide direction and coordination for how a DAP and play based curriculum is implemented consistent with Felton’s ECE philosophy, vision initiatives and recognized best instructional practices. 3. Support the training and implementation of Learning Stories/ DRDP alignment across all of Felton’s ECE programs. 4. Assist Program Supervisors/ Lead/Head Teachers with resources, materials, tools, information, etc. to support classroom instruction and planning, including new resources. 5. Support Program leadership in using data to align DRDP trends to curriculum development/ scaffolding and to improve instructional supports. 6. Provide individual and/or group instructional coaching and mentoring to teachers to improve classroom instruction for all learners. 7. Support Teaching staff to provide environments and opportunities which promote the child’s growth and development for any of the developmental domains, (language and literacy, health and physical development, approaches to learning, social emotional development, creative arts, science, mathematics). 8. In collaboration with external coaches/ leadership assist to structure environments, routines and interactions that contribute to positive social-emotional outcomes for the children and families. 9. Support teachers by helping with the ―strategic how of teaching -- share multiple instructional strategies/processes with teachers during planning times. 10. Conduct teacher observations and/or walk-throughs and provide feedback that facilitates teacher reflection and growth. 11. Work with external coaches to support QIP efforts and monitor continued improvements. 12. Utilize Adult Learning Theory to motivate adult learners to improve professional practice. 13. Develop staff members’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors through a variety of on-boarding and job embedded professional development trainings for leadership/teachers. 14. Provide technical expertise relative to quality assurance and standards related to CDE requirements, DRDP’s, child portfolio’s, ERS, CLASS, QRIS other quality standards. Quality Assurance 15. Track performance and monitor quality assurance progress objectively monthly/ quarterly based on internal key indicators required by organization, regulatory agencies and community care licensing. 16. Conduct audits and assess Felton’s ECE programs compliance by reviewing and analyzing monthly/ quarterly/ annual logs and management checklists to determine consistent fulfilment of required Felton’s ECE operating standards. 17. Ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards (e.g. Community Care Licensing, WestEd, First Five, CDE, etc) and follow up with corrective actions if necessary, to include ensuring Felton’s ECE programs meet/ exceed minimum quality standards (over 3.0 for ERS, over 3 for QRIS, over 4 for CLASS) 18. Ensure Felton’s ECE programs meet/ exceed DRDP requirements (first DRDP within 60 days of DOE, 6 months thereafter, 2 parent/teacher conferences) 19. As requested, collect and monitor all quality documents (e.g. DRDPs, Children’s Portfolios, ERS, CLASS, QRIS) 20. Create / update visual dashboards after external assessments to measure progress overtime. As requested, monitor and prepare reports related to quality improvements/ assurance 21. In collaboration with Admissions Supervisor, Education Director, lead Annual CDE Self-Assessment including, collecting all pertinent components including but not limited to Parent Surveys analysis, DRDP trends and action planning and overall report and submit to Chief Operations Officer. 22. Research and respond to all issues/ appeal in relation to quality assurance processes and external assessments/ compliance matters. Personal Skills: 1. Master’s Degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Human Development, Social Sciences, or related field. Bachelors Required (with 5 years’ experience). 2. Three to five years of experience in a public or private organization or community development agency providing direct delivery of services to clients. Experience working directly with 0- 5 in a teaching position, families and staff in an early care and education setting; with a record of successfully impacting student achievement and working successfully with children who have the greatest needs. 3.
