Position is located in South San Francisco, CA Job Description We are currently seeking an agile Research Associate to play a key role in our team in supporting critical research and IND-enabling animal studies. A successful candidate is required to have prior animal husbandry experience, good working knowledge of oncology models (e.g. syngeneic, orthotopic, transgenic) and proficiency in rodent biomethods.

This role will be responsible for day-to-day maintenance of the animal vivarium where germ-free, gnotobiotic, and specific-pathogen free mice are maintained and support key research and development animal studies. The ideal candidate will need to demonstrate aptitudes in foresight, planning and ability to organize and schedule the many tasks associated with running an animal facility and study support. The candidate should be flexible, excited to wear the many hats to meet the dynamic needs of a start-up environment, proactive and positive.

This person should also have the desire to contribute to a vibrant and dynamic culture. Some ability to build and assemble equipment is desired. Understanding the principles of sterilization in an integral component of this position.

Weekend work is shared by the in vivo team and some work on weekends in the South San Francisco facility will be required. Core responsibilities Responsibilities include daily mouse husbandry, daily health checks, cage changing and sanitation, cleaning of equipment, inventory and ordering of animal and vivarium supplies, building, modifying, servicing and sterilizing gnotobiotic isolators and other supply prep as needed. Assist scientific team in performing experiments with SPF, germ-free, or gnotobiotic mice which may include animal inoculation, compound administration, blood collection, rodent anesthesia, and post-mortem sample collections.

Assist in maintaining a breach-free gnotobiotic mouse facility. Troubleshooting facility and equipment issues. Meticulous attention to details, anticipate potential issues at an early stage before critical problems arise, assess a situation and take the appropriate action with minimal guidance. Following and adhering to standard operating procedures.

Ability to work independently as well as on a team, and able to think critically as well as receptive to taking guidance. Requirements Qualifications & Experience Education: Bachelor’s of science degree in a Life Sciences discipline and at least one (1) year of directly related experience in rodent animal husbandry and technical skills OR High school diploma/GED and at least four (4) years of directly related work experience with rodent animal husbandry and technical skills. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. Certification/Licensure: AALAS Certification at the ALAT level preferred but not required. Experience with mouse handling and various routes of administration (e.g.

sub-cutaneous, intra-peritoneal, intravenous, oral) of compounds and biologics preferred but not required. Strong preference for applicants with prior experience in animal husbandry. Experience with gnotobiotic facility workflows preferred but not required.

A strong ability to flex with the changing needs of a nimble, fast-paced research organization. Flexibility to work up to 4 hours over weekends. Basic computer skills. Comfort with Microsoft Office products and any learning management/database management tools is preferred.

Work in a busy research environment, which requires use of sharp objects, working around mechanical parts, working with or near known or unknown toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biological hazards, exposure to fumes and airborne particles. Work with animal species including rodents with risk of exposure to animal allergens, zoonotic diseases, and biohazards. Work Environment: Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, protective clothing and eye protection. Use of respirator is required for select activities – this requires medical clearance (in all cases) and fit test (for N95 specifically).

Ability to routinely lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds independently and occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance.
