Job Summary:

The purpose of the position is to provide communication and technical writing support to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA). Topic(s) can range from Director's opening remarks, keynote addresses, scientific research announcements, etc. This speech writer should very comfortable writing about highly technical topics in scientific research and development.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Draft speeches, congressional testimony, talking points, and presentations as needed for NSF leadership related to science topics of interest to various stakeholders from Congress to scientific associations and to academia.
  • Develop strategic communications plans, engagement strategies, and messaging to communicate NSF's mission and activities.
  • Write and edit articles, white papers, fact sheets, blogs, web content, and other publications related to science topics of interest to stakeholders, translating complicated scientific concepts and ideas into clear language.
  • Conduct research using internal and external sources, including gathering, developing, and checking accuracy of information with thorough research and interviews with subject-matter specialists and program officials.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, Political Science, or other similar degree. Additional experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in speech writing, technical writing, scientific writing, or professional writing developing a variety of documentation.
  • Experience with Associated Press style conforming with Plain Language standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Experience in Scientific Field is preferred.

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Normal business hours Monday - Friday.
  • Work on-site in NSF Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.
  • On-site federal contractors, in federal buildings or on federal lands must comply with CDC guidelines with respect to wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and other public health measures.
