Middle School English Language Arts Teacher

FLACS seeks a dynamic Middle School English Language Arts educator to  become a  member of our creative and innovative teaching staff  at our new state of the art middle school campus for the 2019-2020 school year.

Family Life Academy Charter Schools (FLACS), in partnership with the Latino Pastoral Action Center and parents, seeks to create the conditions for self-empowerment for all its K-8 students to achieve high academic standards, help them take responsibility for their own learning, and encourage them to explore and affirm human values.

  • Takes a balanced approach to teaching literacy with the goal that students become independent and capable readers, writers, listeners and speakers.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of grade level English language arts content curriculum to engage students using instructional strategies including modeling, and reading to develop mastery in English language arts.
  • Develops innovative instructional methodologies to teach middle school students English language, literature, composition, reading, and journalism using FLACS network curriculum maps and EngageNY curriculum materials.
  • Plans, prepares, and facilitates daily standard based lessons that utilize a variety of instructional strategies which differentiate teaching based on the diverse and individual needs of all students, including general education, students with disabilities and ELLs.
  • Establishes a culture of learning to engage students in rigorous standards based ELA curriculum to ensure students master the state standards and are prepared to enter high school.
  • Integrates technology into the curriculum and classroom.
  • Designs and implements assessments that measure progress towards academic standards. 
  • Uses assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices to create a classroom culture of data driven decision making to close the achievement gap for all students including general education, students with disabilities and ELLs.
  • Creates a classroom environment of respect and rapport to ensure a safe, caring and orderly school environment which nurtures the unique needs of each student.
  • Participates in collaborative curriculum and professional development, professional learning communities, grade-level activities and school wide functions. 
  • Seeks to actively know students’ strengths and challenge areas and communicates effectively with guardians.
  • Upholds the FLACS mission, core beliefs, and educational philosophy.
  • Reflects on practice and is a lifelong learner who strives to improve instructional effectiveness and guide professional growth.
  • Engages and collaborates with colleagues and the community to develop and sustain a common culture that supports high expectations for student learning.
  • Creates ongoing communication with families, guardians and caregivers to enhance student development and success.
  • Demonstrates self-motivation and willingness to be a team player.
  • Attends all required professional development sessions/opportunities provided by the school leader. 
  • Is willing to be videotaped periodically  by the leadership for high impact teacher study and professional learning for "best practices" and/or "areas in need of improvement”. 
  • Understands and maintains that grading for students will be determined by multiple criteria and fair assessments based on the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards.                        
  • Has knowledge and understanding of effective teaching practices for middle school age students.
  • Broad knowledge of literature and of techniques for teaching writing and reading in a variety of contexts.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree is preferred.
  • Prior satisfactory teaching experience preferred.
  • Valid New York State Certification in English Language Arts (grades 5-9) and/or English Language Arts (grades 7-12) and/or Generalist in Middle Childhood Education (grades 5-9).
  • Dual certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or Students with Disabilities is a plus.
  • Clearance for fingerprint and criminal background check.
