Job brief

Fire Safe Sonoma is looking for a responsible County Coordinator to educate, encourage and develop collaboration among all groups throughout Sonoma County that carry out wildfire mitigation, preparation or resiliency work; to help these groups communicate, strategize and coordinate projects and plans; to develop mechanisms as needed such as public outreach, funding plans, governance structures, planning efforts, and assisting with the formation of new groups, with the goal of addressing gaps and supporting ongoing projects and programs to reduce wildfire risk countywide.

This is a flex-time position with negotiable hours. Salary is commensurate with background and experience. Benefits include a monthly stipend to aid with health, vision, and dental care. Paid Time Off including six holidays, vacation, and sick leave accrual based on hours worked.


Grant Cultivation and Management

  • In partnership with the Board’s fundraising efforts, lead the acquisition of grant funding for projects including grant research, writing, management and reporting.
  • Maintain organized grant files, attending necessary funder meetings, tracking all expenses, collecting photos, success stories, and samples of outreach materials generated; and preparing and submitting progress and expense reports and invoices consistent with grant requirements.

Budget Management

  • Project budget development and financial management in partnership with Board Treasurer

Project Management

  • Project planning and project budget development
  • Work with program directors, supervising production of all budgeted and approved programs
  • Plan and oversee program and project systems.
  • Identify projects currently being implemented, planned or desired.
  • Develop a standardized process for categorizing and prioritizing proposed projects.
  • Identify gaps in current preparedness and resiliency status and projects.
  • Develop plans and recommendations for countywide collaboration, integrating with and supporting the Sonoma County Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

External Affairs

  • Identify and meet with representatives of CAL FIRE, regional and state Fire Safe Council groups, County of Sonoma, cities, towns, and local fire agencies, Firewise Communities, Neighborhood Fire Safe Councils, the two Resource Conservation Districts in Sonoma County and other local associations.
  • Assist with the formation of new fire safety groups, as needed groups and organizations working on wildfire mitigation or preparation.


Board Participation

  • Participate at board meetings and on board committees.
  • Provide routine updates and monthly reports to the board of directors.
  • Spearhead strategic planning process, in tandem with Board President.


  • Special events planning and implementation, developing an individual giving program.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Demonstrated sufficient experience in project management and/or implementation.

● Demonstrated ability to organize, direct, plan, and coordinate projects.

● Demonstrated experience managing/leading a small staff or group of volunteers.

● Proficiency in writing and administration of grants and related financial tracking and reporting.


Desirable Qualifications:

● Motivated self-starter passionate about the mission of the Fire Safe Council.

● Outstanding interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability and success working productively with diverse groups of varying interests, business communities, non-profit organizations, governmental entities, and the public.

● Experience and success soliciting funding to sustain or increase funds from individuals, federal and state agencies, philanthropic organizations, and corporations.

● Knowledge of and experience with forest health and wildfire issues in California, Sonoma County.

● Experience in clear and effective public speaking and presentations

● Current CA Driver’s License


Work Environment:

Hybrid: both remote and office setting with occasional participation in in-person meetings, outdoor events, and team building.

Physical Requirements: Continuous sitting. Fine finger movements and manual dexterity. Some bending, lifting up to 35 lbs., grasping. Visual capacity for server workstation use and document review. Occasional driving. Must also be capable of walking on uneven surfaces during project site visits.
