Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary

Position Title: Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA)

Employee Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Doctor

Job Summary:

The EFDA assists in the performance of quality, caring, clinical dentistry by aiding the doctor smoothly and unobtrusively during examinations and treatment. The

EFDA performs clinical and technical procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist as well as prepares the operatory and equipment, gets the patient ready, and maintains awareness of the comfort and safety needs of patients.

Essential Duties:

  • Records treatment information on the patient's chart, including treatment rendered, the type of treatment planned and the amount of chair time, doctor time and assistant time needed for next appointment.
  • Assists the doctor by passing instruments, aspirating intraoral fluids, mixing materials and medicaments during examinations or treatment.
  • Provides customer service support to patients by escorting them to and from the treatment room and prepping them for care by the doctor.
  • Prepares all treatment rooms including, but not limited to, set-up, decontamination, sterilization of all instruments, cleaning and restocking.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the lab and sterilizing area.
  • Maintains all chemical solutions, i.e., disinfectant soaks and sprays, sterilents, ultrasonic, and presoak.
  • Reviews patient’s medical history, progress from the previous visit, if applicable, and the scheduled treatment plan with each patient.
  • Take preliminary and final impressions and bite registrations for diagnostic and opposing models, cast restorations, space maintainers, and occlusal guards, to include computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacture applications.
  • Ensures lights, units, nitrous equipment and automatic processors are turned on prior to the first patient.
  • Applies nonaerosol and noncaustic topical agents, fluoride, and pit and fissure sealants.
  • Inspects patient’s oral cavity and charts lesions, existing restorations and missing teeth.
  • Places and removes temporary sedative dressings and postextraction and periodontal dressings.
  • Helps administer nitrous oxide to patients as applicable.
  • Cleans hand pieces and vacuum traps.
  • Places and removes rubber dams.
  • Places, wedges, and holds and removes anterior matrices.
  • Obtains endodontic cultures.
  • Dries canals with absorbent points.
  • Tests pulp vitality.
  • Places bases and liners on dentin.
  • Removes excess cement from supragingival surfaces of teeth.
  • Sizes stainless steel crowns, temporary crowns, and bands.
  • Performs coronal polishing.
  • Prepares teeth for bonding by etching.
  • Pours and trims study models.
  • Monitors incoming and outgoing lab cases.
  • Orders supplies.
  • Maintains plaster trap and lab counter areas.
  • Gives fluoride treatments.
  • Applies sealants.
  • Places, exposes, and processes radiographs.
  • Gives patient oral health instructions.
  • Performs oral inspection, with no diagnosis.
  • Takes and records blood pressure and vital signs.
  • Takes intra-oral and extra-oral photographs and digital scans.
  • Gives preoperative and postoperative instructions.
  • Delivers an oral sedative drug to patient.
  • Assists in the administration of inhalation minimal sedation (nitrous oxide) analgesia, including starting and stopping the flow as directed by the supervising dentist.
  • Places topical anesthetics..
  • Places a matrix and wedge for a direct restorative material after the dentist has prepared the cavity.
  • Places cavity liners and bases.
  • Performs acid etch and applies bonding agents.
  • Polishes restorations but may not intra-orally adjust or finish permanent restorations.
  • Places retraction cord.
  • Holds in place and removes impression materials after the dentist has placed them.
  • Takes impressions, bite registrations, or digital scans of the teeth and jaws for: diagnostic and opposing models; fixed and removable orthodontic appliances, occlusal guards, bleaching trays, and fluoride trays; and temporary indirect restorations such as temporary crowns.
  • Takes digital scans of prepared teeth for fabrication of permanent indirect restorations.
  • Takes a facebow transfer for mounting study casts.
  • Fabricates and delivers bleaching and fluoride trays.
  • Fabricates, cements, and removes temporary crowns or temporary bridges.
  • Removes the excess cement after the dentist has placed a permanent or temporary inlay, crown, bridge or appliance, or around orthodontic bands.
  • Places a temporary filling (as zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE)) after diagnosis and examination by the dentist.
  • Packs and medicates extraction areas.Places periodontal packs.Removes periodontal packs or sutures.
  • Selects denture shade and mold.
  • Places and removes orthodontic separators.
  • Selects and fits orthodontic bands, try in fixed or removable orthodontic appliances prior to the dentist cementing or checking the appliance.
  • Prepares teeth for the bonding of orthodontic appliances.
  • Bonds attachments for clear removable orthodontic aligners.
  • Removes and replaces archwires and orthodontic wires.
  • Fits and adjusts headgear.
  • Removes fixed orthodontic appliances, orthodontic cement, and orthodontic bonded resin material.


  • Skilled in the use of standard dental office equipment including: Autoclave, model trimmer, X-ray machine - Pano, Panoramic X-ray, ultrasonic, Oxygen and Nitrous Oxide, Laser, Intra Oral camera, Vacu-press, and hand pieces.
  • Ability to take blood pressure and vitals
  • Knowledge of cross contamination and how to prevent it.
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism when exposed to stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and changes.
  • Ability to take radiographs, including FMX, Pano and anterior PA’s.
  • Knowledge of English composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Skilled in the use of standard office equipment including: telephones, calculators, copiers, fax, computers, and computer software (MS Excel,
  • Word, Practice Management software).
  • Ability to engender trust from the doctors, co-workers, and patients.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with management, staff, and patients.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete tasks in a timely and independent manner.
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and maintain confidentiality.

Education / Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 year(s) relevant experience in the dental profession

Special Requirements/Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid X-ray certificate
  • Current EFDA licenseCPR & first aid certificate

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • May be required to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • May be required to roll a 90-pound machine on wheels from one area to another.
  • Hand-eye coordination and hand, arm, and finger mobility for detailed work with objects.
  • May be required to physically assist or lift drowsy patients after anesthesia.
  • Active movement throughout the day: sitting, walking, standing, squatting, bending, stooping, reaching, etc. (not a sedentary position).
  • Vision: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing: able to satisfactorily communicate with patients, doctor, and other staff members to ensure that verbal communication is clearly understood, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or operate equipment.
  • May be required to administer CPR.Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation.Exposure to moderate noise levels.Exposure to hectic, fast-paced, high anxiety environments.
