Job Description

Job located in Gilbert, AZ

Role and Responsibilities

The Civil Structural Engineer will report directly to the President and will be responsible for the following:

  • Perform visual evaluations of existing buildings, site walls, site bridges to determine deficiencies that are present and document deficiencies via photographs. Must be comfortable using ladders and walking on roofs as this is a frequent task.
  • Prepare civil site plans, repair details, engineering and architectural drawings for project work based on field evaluations of buildings and project sites.
  • Perform structural calculations and design repair details for project work. Repair details may include but are not limited to lintel design, balcony design, roof framing design, site wall replacement, etc.
  • Prepare bidding documents and project specifications for capital improvement projects.
  • Prepare written reports based on field evaluation of buildings.
  • Perform project management services for capital improvement projects such as roof replacements, balcony repairs, site wall replacements, façade repairs, etc.
  • Keep track of time on all project work.
  • Work with President and other engineers as needed to ensure project work is completed on time and under budget.
  • Meet with President on a weekly basis.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

The team member candidate will preferably have the following qualifications:

  • 4-6 years experience working in a similar capacity
  • Licensed Structural Engineer in the State of Arizona and Illinois Preferred by not required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural Engineering (Masters Preferred)
  • Self-Starter motivated to help grow company
  • Comfortable talking to clients on the phone and polite
  • Driven to follow through on tasks, responsible and pays attention to details
  • Knowledge of building construction

Preferred Skills

The candidate will preferably have the following skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, SketchUp, and AutoCad
  • Proficient in Steel, Concrete, and Wood Design
  • Experience with specification writing
  • Technical writing skills

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computer, printer, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office and field equipment.

Requirements may also include:

  • Ability to attend meetings at various office, field and construction sites
  • Ability to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instruments
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors
  • Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials and computer screens
  • Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
  • Ability to travel and to safely work at heights
  • Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts and other access equipment
  • Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazards
  • Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations
  • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle

ESS strives to use the latest technology while evaluating our clients building to aid our staff in determining the best solutions to our clients building problems.
Our equipment is calibrated on a regular basis as specified by equipment manufacturers to ensure our results are accurate and reliable.

Professional Education
The staff of ESS frequently attend educational seminars to keep abreast of changes to industry codes, standards of practice, new product development, etc.
ESS staff is involved in professional organizations such as CAI, CSI, NABIE, NSPE, RFMA, and SWRI
