Job Description

The Construction Foreman directs and supervises highly skilled trades personnel assigned to the Campus Construction Team (CCT) in the construction, repair, and alteration of building structures, including interior and exterior renovations, following recognized procedures and techniques of the construction industry and University standards. The Construction Foreman is a working foreman, responsible for directly performing a wide range of skilled construction tasks, such that fifty percent of the Construction Foreman’s daily job duties consists of performing construction work. The Construction Foreman is responsible for daily and weekly planning and scheduling of work activities for the Campus Construction Team, which completes assigned projects that are appropriate for their level of skill and time availability. The Construction Foreman assigns specific jobs based upon an evaluation of job requirements and individual expertise and supervises the work. The Construction Foreman assists in planning, developing estimates, and implementing the phasing required to accomplish the assigned project. The Construction Foreman monitors the assigned work and enforces federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials.

Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Completion of a Construction Management program or trade-related vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program in carpentry, construction, or a related field is preferred. Experience: At least six years of journeyman-level experience in carpentry or the building trades is required. Cabinetmaker experience is preferred. Experience in the installation of ceramic tile, vinyl tile, carpet, concrete, and wall-coverings is preferred. Skills: Supervisory skills, particularly in ability to instruct others and delegate, are required. Construction skills are required, including the ability to use small hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing devices, as well as equipment and materials applicable to the construction, carpentry and painting trades. Knowledge of the safe use of hazardous materials, solvents, cleaners, adhesives, and chemicals common to construction work is required. The ability to interpret blueprints, color schemes, sketches, and schematics is required. Computer literacy is required. Effort: Must be able to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds on a frequent basis and up to one-hundred pounds on an occasional basis; prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching is required on a daily basis. A full range of physical motion is required in order to operate manual and electrically-powered tools, sprayers, and construction-related equipment. The ability to move throughout campus, including climbing stairs in all University buildings and to work at heights from ladders or scaffolding, in order to perform construction-related work is required. Work is performed indoors and out-of-doors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards. Near-vision acuity is required to inspect repairs and maintenance, read blueprints, building code manuals and other similar documents. Some positions in this job classification (job title) are designated as essential employees who must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather; the supervisor will communicate whether the particular position is considered essential and under what situations. Other: The scope of the position requires responding to construction emergencies or other unforeseen situations around-the-clock, as well as working in the evenings and on weekends as needed during the progress of construction projects. The scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and adhesives common to construction work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed. A valid Texas driver’s license is required.
