+ POSITION SUMMARY
+ Performs various non-technical and limited technical functions in microbiology which allows the timely flow of specimens through the department. Maintains the integrity of samples from receipt to storage and performs testing as allowed by accreditation agencies. Performs specific departmental tasks, inclusive of equipment maintenance, quality control and other duties as assigned by the microbiology supervisor.
+ KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Receives specimens into the microbiology department, verifying specimen types, maintaining expected TAT’s, maintaining specimen integrity, performing validation of orders to specimen types, and recognizing problems and discrepancies with follow-up resolution.
+ Performs centrifugation of specimens and aliquots all necessary specimens for preparation of analysis, inclusive of molecular testing.
+ Performs, documents, and reports all assigned testing accurately.
+ Performs microbiology tasks to include, planting bacterial and fungal cultures, gram staining, and loading of blood culture analyzer, EIA rapid tests, and PCR specimen set-up for analysis.
+ Performs maintenance of analyzers, general quality control, stock and inventory tasks, aliquoting reagents and routine maintenance of quality control organisms.
+ Performs preliminary positive blood culture set-up.
+ Answers incoming phone calls, provides patient testing results and/or test requirements as appropriate and refers technical questions to microbiology staff.
+ Performs final disposition of specimen to storage via standard tube tracking procedures.
+ Assists Technologists by sorting culture plates to ease workflow.
+ Performs MicroScan prompt to plate inoculation.
+ Helps to train new off shift technical staff on culture set-up, rapid EIA assays, PCR assays, and other related duties.
+ Performs other microbiology tasks as assigned by microbiology supervisor.

+ Education: Bachelors Degree strongly preferred.
+ Experience: Laboratory clinical support and/or medical experience preferred.
+ Software/Hardware: Basic computer skills required, knowledge of LIS is desired.
