Editorial Projects in Education, Inc. (EPE), the publisher of Education Week, and the nation's leading source for coverage of K-12 education issues and news, seeks a Deputy Managing Editor for Digital. This position is a senior level position in the newsroom that serves as the head of digital news strategy.

Job Summary
The Deputy Managing Editor (DME) for Digital at Education Week leads editorial efforts to optimize the use of our major digital platforms and news products-- the CMS, our websites, and newsletters - to positively impact organization KPIs. This role sits at the intersection of content creation, technology, and audience experience for Education Week, and Market Brief. The DME for Digital will collaborate at an elevated level with senior leaders in our editorial, technology, analytics, and business departments to create strategies for effectively leveraging platforms and news products to advance company goals in journalism and business.
The DME reports to the Editor-in-Chief and serves as a key advisor to and partner with the EIC in building and sustaining a modern newsroom culture of best digital practice as it evolves around content creation, production, presentation, and distribution. This position is responsible for leading a team of digital news specialists who provide guidance and support to reporters and editors in the effective use of our major platforms and products. The DME will be a key participant in senior-level organizational decisions about the development or acquisition of new tools and platforms.

Major Responsibilities & Duties

  • Serve as editorial's senior operational owner of our content management system (CMS), and of our newsletter portfolio and email service provider (ESP), including managing production and sending of newsletters, testing, and optimizing/improving newsletters
  • Develop and maintain adherence to workflows for the creation and production of all content for all properties within the CMS
  • Lead content strategy on the websites, overseeing the management and effective use of tags/taxonomy, labels, web page templates and page types, all with the goal of optimizing the user experience and making the site as engaging as possible. This includes presentation decisions, which will be done in collaboration with the Visual Experiences (VEX) team as it relates to visuals
  • Coordinate with Marketing and Analytics teams to apply effective decision-making on use of recirculation units, as well as the use of secondary digital tools such as pdf downloads, forms, and other integrations such as social media
  • In collaboration with the Director of Audience Engagement, coordinate management of major newsletter titles to assess performance and set future goals
  • Work closely with journalists across departments and time zones to write, edit, schedule, produce and proofread newsletters
  • Partner with the Senior Project Manager, and Director of Digital Operations as editorial's lead strategist in the maintenance and continuous improvement of our digital properties, while also assisting in managing editorial's relationship with IT and Digital Operations regarding digital properties and the SEO Team
  • Partner with Audience Engagement & Analytics and Library teams on management and governance of our taxonomy, with special attention to assuring that our system is designed and maintained to maximize audience value and achieve editorial and revenue goals as well as strategy and tactics for driving engagement KPIs and for driving subscriptions and registrations
  • Regularly evaluate employee performance, set goals, identify professional-development goals and objectives, and recommend and implement changes to better meet EPE priorities
  • Manage expenses within approved budget
Qualifications & Skills
  • At least 5 years of experience in digital web strategy or production or a related field
  • Extensive knowledge in the field of digital journalism; dedication to the mission of Education Week, and EPE
  • Expert-level understanding ofbest practices arounddigital storytelling,audience engagement, news product development and optimization, and editorial workflows
  • Strong understanding of user experience, web design, site architecture, analytics and data-driven decision-making, A/B and multivariate testing, and media revenue generation
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current trends in journalism, digital storytelling and education as well as excellent editorial judgement
  • Strong desire and ability to embrace and learn new technologies, ability to think strategically about use of new and emerging technologies, and recommend and implement new ways to further develop the mission and goals of EPE
  • Ability to collaborate with all stakeholders, and work closely with top newsroom leaders and the Editor-in-Chief, on strategic visioning of newsroom priorities and practices
  • Detail-oriented, deadline-focused, and excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills
  • Exhibits willingness to try new things, adapts well to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands and can deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events
  • Superior experience managing, training, coaching, and developing staff to continually higher levels of performance and potential
