ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Educare DC is growing to serve over 424 children from birth to five years - and their families - through our state-of-the-art centers and through seven community partnerships. Building on the program foundations of Early Head Start and Head Start, Educare DC promotes school readiness by implementing effective programming aimed at preventing the development of an achievement gap in the early years. Educare DC is part of the 25-school Educare Learning Network that serves as a platform for broader change, inspiring high-quality programs in communities, improving public policies within each state, and demonstrating a comprehensive, research-based approach to the first five years of life and learning to increase equity and opportunity for all. Educare DC draws on a blend of private and public dollars, including child care, Early Head Start, Pre-K, and other state and federal funding streams.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Development Manager will be responsible for the daily operations of the development team, including grant management, oversight of gift processing and of the database. This position will work closely with the Vice President of Development and Communications in order to achieve annual fundraising goals, and will be supported by 1 staff member. The Development Manager will join a team with a solid fundraising operation with an excellent base of foundation grants, quality communications, and good systems - in our $15 million budget, currently $2.2 million is private donations, mostly from foundations.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Development Manager reports to the Vice President of Development and Communications.

Responsibilities

Fundraising
  • Grants management:
    1. Oversee the writing process for complex proposals and reports. Manage an external vendor for grant writing to ensure execution of goals and priorities.
    2. Manage grant reports to foundations by providing solid reporting, collecting updates to illuminate the value and impact of the grants, informing and editing drafts prepared by external writers, and ensuring all reports are high-quality, complete, and submitted on time.
    3. For grants with restrictions, manage the contract set-up processes and filing of all grant and compliance documentation.
    4. Manage restricted grants including developing budgets, tracking spending and preparing required financial reports.
    5. Work closely with the finance office to ensure optimal use of restricted funds.
  • Support the annual private revenue budgeting process, developing projections, and managing reports to guide organizational decision-making.
  • Monitoring of fundraising key performance indicators to report to the Board of Directors and executive team. Ensure the fundraising dashboard is up-to-date for projections and donation tracking.
  • Manage the prospect research process.
  • Management of the data and process for mailings and other donor outreach, including appeals, newsletters, and other materials or reports that support fundraising.


Operations
  • Manage day-to-day fundraising operations including database maintenance, data analysis, timely gift processing (including credit card, check, ACH, stock and wire gifts) and acknowledgment, entry and tracking of donor pledges, and year-to-year comparisons.
  • Within the database, ensure data integrity and up-to-date donor information, generate segmented solicitation lists, develop reports and analyses to evaluate fundraising progress and opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage external vendors and contractors in the service of Educare DC's goals.
  • Refine internal procedures and structures to ensure productivity and responsiveness within the development operation.
  • Prepare periodic reports, financial statements, and records as needed on program activities, progress, and status.
  • Other duties as required.


EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES
  • Highly organized with extraordinary attention to detail. Comfort with multi-tasking. Demonstrated ability to prioritize, manage projects efficiently, and meet deadlines.
  • Advanced knowledge of fundraising databases (e.g. Bloomerang, Salesforce, Raisers Edge), including inputting, creating, and extracting reports, and comprehensive understanding of donor data fields.
  • Fundraising and financial acumen. Thorough understanding of development operations, processes, and systems.
  • Solid experience managing donor mailings, tracking gifts, and writing acknowledgements.
  • Experience writing grants, tracking grant requirements and deliverables, and writing grant reports.
  • Excellent judgment, creative problem-solving skills, and a critical thinker. You see the big picture while understanding the details and monitor key performance metrics, driving towards goals.
  • Results oriented, eager to be held accountable, and a stickler for follow through.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Access, Powerpoint, Outlook).
  • A strong passion for and commitment to the mission of Educare DC, and a deep understanding of structural racism and its impact on under-resourced communities and people of color.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in liberal arts, business administration, or related field with five years of experience working in a quality fundraising operation.


ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Clearance of background checks as required by local, state and federal regulations.
  • Physical examination and diagnostic tests as required by local, state and federal regulations.
  • A bi-annual physical exam, drug screen, COVID-19 vaccine, and TB test are required as a condition of continual employment.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Advanced command of the English language and grammar, both verbal and written.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer and office equipment, including, but not limited to, the telephone, fax machine, copier, and tape recorder.
  • Experience working successfully with a culturally diverse staff and clients.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • This position may work 40 or more hours per week.

The pay range is $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience.
