Associate Director of Mechanical/Electrical Engineering (Remote)
Eagle Creek Renewable Energy owns and/or operates 85 hydroelectric facilities throughout the United States and is currently seeking associate director candidates to join our mechanical and electrical engineering team. The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of experience and preference will be given to candidates with power generation experience. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to perform a broad range of work tasks with support from other engineering and management staff. A representative cross section of anticipated responsibilities is presented below.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of a small team of engineers that is responsible for the mechanical, electrical, and control equipment across a portion of our portfolio of hydroelectric plants. Systems include turbines, generators, powertrain components, auxiliary mechanical systems, electrical switchgear, transformers, PLC control systems, protective relaying, floodgate lifting mechanisms, environmental protection equipment, and other systems. The team works on large capital projects, outage response, and asset optimization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a team of mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers.
- Use technical knowledge to help support business strategy, including the evaluation of new acquisitions.
- Support and drive the preparation of specifications and other engineering documents to procure and install a wide variety of hydro-electric equipment and systems.
- Support planning and provide direction to engineers and others responsible for hydro-electric equipment installation, assembly, and disassembly.
- Lead the troubleshooting of equipment failures and drive root cause evaluations.
- Oversee the evaluation, selection, and specification of the components required to refurbish and/or upgrade hydro-electric equipment.
- Serve as a representative of the company at shop inspections and factory acceptance tests related to hydro-electric systems.
- Direct contractors and hydro project staff at facilities to accomplish equipment repair and upgrades.
- Provide operations & maintenance recommendations for hydro-electric systems.
- Oversee project implementation and ensure projects are completed on-time and on-budget.
- Direct contractors and other resources to execute projects.
- Hydro-electric equipment and duties within the scope of this position includes but is not limited to generators, governors, excitation systems, generator circuit breakers, switchgear, switchboards, motor control centers, motors, control boxes, relay panels, lighting systems, power distribution systems and components, instrumentation (level, flow, pressure, temperature, vibration), and diesel engine-generator sets.
Preferred Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Self-starter, motivated and innate drive to succeed.
- Knowledge of electrical safety principles and best practices
- Experience troubleshooting issues with operating systems in the field.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects and oversee teams executing projects
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings including single-line diagram, schematics, block, and wiring among different standards
- Knowledge of standards such as IEC, NEC, IEEE, ISO, ANSI, NFPA and ASTM
- Automation experience, including PLC and HMI, preferable Allen-Bradley and Rockwell. SCADA knowledge is a plus. Controls networks, DeviceNet, ControlNet, Ethernet (fundamental)
- Experience with troubleshooting and testing tools, such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, process calibrators, megger, and their usage. Auxiliary test equipment like thermal cameras and infrared temperature monitors is an advantage.
- In-depth understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical components.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 8+ years of technical experience engineering equipment and systems at industrial or utility‐scale or 15+ years of experience in the hydroelectric industry managing mechanical, electrical, and controls projects.
- Demonstrated management ability and prior experience managing a team.
- Strong technical background with a demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize a wide array of different projects.
- Travel as required for project supervision and execution (~30%)
- Ability to perform operational tasks. Operational tasks may include:
- The ability to climb ladders and to be at heights.
- The ability and dexterity to manipulate various size components from valves
to small electrical switches to computer keyboards. - The ability to "handle" quick changing situations under stress.
- The ability to work on or near water.
