TEM Analyst

EMSL Analytical, Inc., one of the largest environmental testing firms in the United States, is currently seeking a full time Scientist- specializing in mineral analysis for its asbestos laboratory in our laboratory location in Charlotte, NC. This person will be responsible for the preparation and analysis of samples using TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), they will also analyze/train in PCM (Phase Contrast Microscopy) and PLM (Polarized Light Microscopy). We can offer the successful candidate relocation and a chance for advancement. With a network of over 40+ labs, after a few years gaining experience employees are eligible to relocate to any of our other laboratories across the US and Canada.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Analyzing air, rock, soil and bulk materials for mineral fibers.
Identification of mineral fibers by:
- Transmission Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive spectrometry and electron diffraction patterns. Tests include AHERA. NOB, ASTM 6480, ASTM 5755.

- Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) analysis and air sample analysis
Assist in the development of research studies, methods, standard operating procedures and publications
Assist with clerical and lab duties as needed, such as data entry, sample review, and maintenance/calibration of laboratory instrumentation/equipment
Perform QA/QC practices per company QA/QC manual
Record data in a specified manner
Some clerical work involved
Maintain and troubleshoot equipment
Perform QA/QC practices per company QA/QC manual

Requirements:
Associates, Bachelors' or Graduate Degree in Earth or Life Sciences: Geology, Materials Science, Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, and/or Chemistry
Experienced candidates are welcomed and encouraged to apply
Light microscopy, optical mineralogy/petro-graphic microscope training a plus
One to two years' of asbestos TEM/PCM experience is preferred but not required - will train
Candidate must be able to distinguish colors in order to perform analysis.
Must be able to work independently and with a team
Must be able to work in a fast-paced setting, multi-task, and prioritize assignments
Must have good communication, computer, typing, and organizational skills

Available Shift:
Monday to Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., extra hours and/or weekend work may be required depending on business demands.
